Well I was driving by today and saw a 1987 300ZX for sale. Its sky blue with black leather. It has T-Tops and is an auto.

It has 97K miles. The timing belt was changed at around 60K miles and water pump not to long ago.

The seats are worn out.

According to him, the engine and trans. run/shift without any problems.

He changed synthetic oil regularly.

The body is in a pretty good shape. I only found rust in the rear quarter panel right behind the rear tire towards the edges.

Also, front right bumper is sort of "dented" in. It was hit by an Explorer. Its nothing major, but can notice its a dent.

I will drive it tommorow.

Hes asking $800 obo. What should I offer him?

Is this a good deal?

Thanks.

- Omar

Go for it. $800 is nothing for a running, decent bodied Z. I would even pick it up, though I don't need it or have space for it.

Thanks for the response guys.

I just got back after checking out the car. I test drove it. Although it ran well, heres what I found out today:

- need to add about 2-3 oz. of oil every month. - the fan blade hits something while running. The edges of the blade are worn . - needs a U-joint (I dont know what that is) - A/C needs to be recharged - missing antenna - the front right side is damaged including corner of hood. Doesnt look ugly, but nothing bad either - hydraulics that hold up the hood need to be replaced - although it works, the lens on the headlight is broken - driver seat is ripped and worn

Here is a list of he did to the car:

- timing belt at 62K miles - waterpump at around 80K-90K miles - tune-up at around 60K miles - rear brakes put in last month - new rotors - tires will last about a 1 - 1.5 years - new exhaust - battery less than 2 years old - all parts were from Nissan except the brake pads

Considering its an '87, the body is great. The paint is beautiful. The car ran well. It jerked a little and I was told that was because of the worn U-Joint. Can anyone chime in on that?

Well he came down to $475.

Good deal?

Thanks for your time.

For 475, that leaves plenty of room for fix-up. You need to get that rust fixed by a respectable body shop before it spreads.. I learned that when I used to drive my 88. Keep an eye on the steering rack, as Z's sometimes have problems with it. Dunno what the dilly is with the U-joint. Fan blade might have been hitting / is hitting the fan cover.. I reccomend the electric fan conversion (not too pricy)

My $.02-Kev

U-joint will probly mean replacement of the driveshaft if it is like the 240. I wouldn't worry about it. Infact I don't I just have a little vibration. Not enough to care. 475 bucks is cheap cheap cheap!

U-joint holds your driveshaft to the rear differential. It's a simple part, and pretty cheap to fix. If you're lucky, it'll come right off and you can just replace it rather than the whole shaft. Not a big deal though.

If it breaks while you're driving you just stop getting power, transmission fluid goes everywhere, and before that the car feels like it's going to shake apart, lots of fun. (Happened to me with a friend in a '65 Stang)

I'd go for it, sounds like a bit of a project, but not too bad for an '87 Z!
