In a nutshell, I left my car running for 7 hours straight today. I got out of it at work, guess I didn't realize that I didn't push the button to turn it off, didn't hear it running, and walked away. 7 hours later a page comes across the building for the owner of a new silver Altima 2 door... I call and find out it had been on since this morning. I run out there, turn it off, let the engine cool down for about 5 minutes, then drive it around (very carefully) to make sure everything is still running alright. As far as I can tell, everything is okay. Is there anything in particular that I might need to check as a potential problem? Could this cause any damage or any abnormal wear or am I just out some gas?

I even told the dealer when I bought the car that I could see myself doing this...

Oh dude,..not good letting a car run for that long of a time will change you timing! Don't you know that?

Joking!!! No worries, I've ALMOST done that but lucky for me I've upgraded my exhaust so now I hear a low growl from the exhaust! Your car will be ok! promise

Hey, I just did the same thing yesterday! Now I don't feel so stupid! I stopped to do some shopping at a local hardware store and was distracted by an accident on the road as I pulled into a parking space. The motor was so quiet I never thought for a moment that I hadn't pushed the "stop" button. 15 minutes later I unlock the car and see that it's been running the whole time. Maybe those advocates for the blind have another car to get upset about that's not a hybrid!

Hmm. I am kind of confused though... Isnt the engine supposed to shut off by itself after a certain period when there is no key within the specified radius?

glad to know it will be okay. surprisingly, it only used about 3 gallons. Granted in today's economy that's 12 bucks... but it could have been much worse.

I dont understand...

When you walk away from the car with your keys in your hand, the car beeps i believe 10 times fast in a high pitch letting you know its running... right?

I've done it too, but it was noisy and it was *only* for about 20 minutes.

I wonder if you can disable the beep for no key, just like you can disable the beep for locking the car?

Don't feel so bad. I left mine running while my husband and I were eating breakfast at Bob Evans! I felt so stupid!!! I made my husband promise not to tell anyone. But my car was fine, and I don't remember any alarms or anything.

One thing I really love about the Coupe is the fact that the warning beeps aren't too loud or annoying. I was driving my mother's 2006 Ford Five Hundred last month and the damn thing beeped really loudly if you even shifted in the seat. Don't buckle the seat belt and it beeps 28 times! I don't know how she stands it, but the car's probably geared towards blue-haired old ladies who don't hear so good anyway. Of course the flipside of the Coupe's quieter, non-annoying warning beeps is that you won't hear them as well if you're parking near a busy street with a lot of loud traffic whizzing by.

i always felt the engine should shut down after a period of time if the key was not in vacinity....my stupid dealer told me that if the key is not near the car and you step on the break it shuts down...as in..if u stop at LBC's xyz store....and hussian jumps in to try and "own" octipussi.....then sec hussain drives off and hits the brake....KITT should shut down.......but that aint the case....hussain and octi would drive off into the sunset...leaving LBC to crackberry to the forum his great tragedy....there has to be away to get that to happen tho...key outta range...engine shut down...its safe and eco friendly!

where's KP tech?....still working out the details of a group buy?...

what my dealer said is that the engine wont shut off until it runs out of gas, and if the car gets stolen, the instant they turn the car off, theyre SOL.

also for those of you who say your car beeps all the time when you get out of it.....if you open your door before you shut the engine off it beeps at you to remind you that a door is open....try it.....leave the engine on and open the door.....beeps....close the door....beeping stops. now wait until you turn the engine off to open you door.....no beeps.

Don't feel too bad. Just think that you were letting your brand new car breaking in. Although this break-in method of letting the car/motorcycle idle for hours was used about 20 years ago.......

Been there, done that, wrote a book about it, designed a webpage and a blog, knocked out a quick Facebook, then posted on Myspace!

Don't feel bad man. I left my old altima running, caught the subway, went to work, put in 8 hours, caught the subway back, walked to the car, stood there for 10 minutes trying to find my dam keys, lol, then realized I heard a little hum, that new car hummm, looked in through the window and saw the keys still in the ignition, opened the damn door, it was unlocked...and still running, for at least 10 hours...lol.
