Car: Thinking my friend and I have mechanical skills

Post

So like I said, I'm back.

The school I've been at you aren't allowed to have a car untill spring break junior year. that would be this upcoming march.

I have regreted selling my s14 since about an hour after it left my hands.

Anyways, I've been saving and ploting and scheming and I think I'm going to have about $12k to start my next project.

However, it seems like prices on things have gone up alot, not to mention actually finding a good vehicle no one has messed with. Luckly I don't have to worry about mechanical work, I can do that myself, but I don't know jack about body modification.

So this is where you come in.

If you had 12k what would you do?

My personal priorities are speed first, handleing and then style.

I value every members advice, so feel free to put your .02 cents in.

Or feel free to tell me to **** off.

Hell, lets not even limit it to the 240sx, any car, and mods, total budget 12k

Right now, I'm thinking the most logical choice is a fastback with KA-T.

What do you think?

If I had time, and the money, I would buy a good shell for like 500 dollars, invest 11500 in mods. I would go for a built ka-t, which should be about the same price as an sr, and will have more available parts, and probably make much more power.

See, that is what I was thinking, but when I started crunching numbers, 11,5 didn't seem to go that far.

that might be true but at least when you start off, you'll have a lighter car. im thinkin when naed240sx said shell im thinkin no interior or nothing. so lighter and you can put what you want in it. engine and transmission you can buy low mileage ones for what, like 350? then s14 seats, suspension, brakes from z32 rears, and s14 fronts, wheels and tires can run 500 on a good deal,? im thinkin its a great start from just a shell plus as time goes buy you can save more money

this is what i did 3300 95 s14zeal coilovers 1450 ( sponsored half price) 3300 s15 engine without diff installed myself ( so no labor charge)now here is where i went wrong, i took the whole car appart and stated moddig things, the means i did the 5 lug convertion and z32 brakes, while 5 lug wheels are are not even here (still in japan being made) kouki convertion with wide body kits, ( part of the problem since parts are still being made in japan and i have only half the stuff) z32 wheel 400 which don't fit the car because of the Zeal coilovers.( the tires rub the coil purch)

all in all i have spent about 15k and the car is not driveble yet cause i decided to do everything at once.

my advice find your self a good s14 for about 3k spend another 3-4k on the turbo kit.spend the other 5 grand on some dencent suspention,( 1800) some nice wheels an exhaust and you should be set. just learn from my mistake and don't take things apart and give up for free unless you have the part to replace it with.

That sounds like a good idea aswell, but don't you think I probably want to rebuild the engine before I throw on the turbo.

Man, I'm almost thinking trying something else, 300zx, 3000gt, MR2.

Hell I dunno anymore.

Get an FD with a blown motor and put the ls1 kit in it. Thats DEFINITELY what I would do. (it only weighs 60lbs more for you balance freaks).

^^^you talking about the once in sport compact car? that thing is awesome i almost think i shouldve bought an fd instead of a s14. but im glad i bought the s14.

i guess you could rebuild motor and boost it, then spend most of the rest on suspension, brakes, and wheels....then the rest on some interior stuff like seats, steering wheel, etc. and then if anything is left over some subtle body peices. something like in that sorta direction.

I would stay away for FDs because they can be costly as hell I have a friend that is in pretty big debt because of one. I would get a S14 because you would get a better resale value and most S14 arn't rusted out like the S13s. Throw on a turbo kit on it, get some decent brakes, get decent suspension, and finish with some rims. That should come in slightly below budget. You can also look into buying a semi modded car usually the owner ends up loosing on the performance parts side.

Well now. Thats a silly rule, and easily cheated, too.

Find someone who is a junior or senior and doesn't drive a car. Then have them register the car's permit under their name. All you have to do is make it worth their while, if you know what I mean.

Like I said, easily done.

WOW, 12K?!? thats alot. wat would i do?I guess I would get a used 240 with a good running engine and frame. I'd build it up to factory code, mod it up a notch, kick it up another notch, then watevers left over can be for cosmetics. Scratch out cosmetics, make ur car a sleeper. add some dents.
