It means if you're paying more than $20/month for your internet you're getting reamed.

Woohoo still winning for home users...Though that's just because of Comcast's "Power Boost" feature. It's probably in the 10mb's range.

Does that have anything to do with the fact that Hughes is ISP through satellite?

Home (wired):

When I torrent the fastest I usually can DL is 1.5MB per second and the fastest I UL is 250kbs per second. Do these numbers correclty translate to my speed test results or has my ISP been throttling my arse?

No, 1.5MBps translates to 12Mbps.

The limit with torrents is your connections per torrent. This overall is limited by your networking equipment. Most routers limit you to 256 to 512 total connections. I use DDWRT and set my router to 1024 connections. Then in your torrently client, I use utorrent, go in to the connections setting and change connections limit and connections per torrent to the max.

Kinda like this....

Can you explain what you mean about the stuff you mentions about the router part of this?

Do you have a router attached to the cable modem? If so, what is the Brand, Model, and Version of it. I'll be able to better assist you with this.

I configure the bandwidth settings like this:

Uncheck automatic. Set it to like 50.Global 1024Maximum 1024Number 5

Uncheck <90%

Port forwarding is needed to get real speed. My only problem is I end up locking up the router and have to reboot it. I have sustained speeds >2000Mb/s when downloading torrents.

2000Mb = 250MB. You'd have to be on the fiber backbone in a major city to hit that.

Did you mean 2000KB? That would be 2MB which makes more sense.

Either way, most torrenting applications don't require manual port forwarding anymore. They usually use a port in the 50k range which are unused and considered safe by most firewalls and routers.

lolz...yeah, >2000kB. My estimated max download is 2.38MB.

I've been playing with my system and found my udp/tcp ports were not enabled for my network connection which I've fixed. I also have 290 download connections set with no issue thus far (and I'm still tweaking). Was downloading at 968kB/s a minute ago.

Oh look it's yet another "look how fast my intarwebz are" thread...

I'll play along though.

That's with my laptop's wireless connection

That's with my laptop wired into my router.

I pay $50 a month for Comcast's internet, but I also have a lot of devices leaching off of my router (2x Ipod touches, 1x Wii, 1x Xbox 360 and my neighbors occasionally hack into my router)

God Damn dude, must be nice to be able to leach off of the City's multi-million dollar Wi-Fi signal. Now if they had used that money towards the city budget I'd probably be a Philly cop right now.

Whoa, Dusred, you live in Colorado city? Are you a polygamist? I've driven through there a few times, I'm surprised they even have internet.

No, I'm surrounded by alcoholics, drug addicts, and ghetto a** Section 8's, pretty much your typical Philly faire. They have their own wireless connections but hack off mine because they don't know how to setup their own.

Yes. It just takes time for signals to go up and back. I live in Vermont, and my closest server is in Kansas City, MO.

You can setup a password to keep them out.
