so i was coming last night from a 240 meet...

as im slowing down to exit the freeway to my house, i immediately notice i cant turn easily...lucky im not an idiot who drives fast for no reason...

i was able to exit no problem man handling the steering wheel...

i make it home (was only a block form my house from the exit) and i pull over....turn my car off...pop the hood and notice my reservoir had over flown from one of the soft hose section (the one that leads from reservoir, to hard line, to steering rack...

at first i thought ok hmm maybe i over filled my reservoir, but then again ive had my p/s runnign for 1 month and some change...

got up today, i removed my p/s belt (to keep my p/s pump safe) and man handled the car to autozone, got some fluid and re installed the belt....

no change...

things to point out...

1. the reservoir line that leads to the steering rack had over flooded ( even though its clamped nice and tight)

2. when i removed the the p/s belt, the pulley on the pump moved like butter ( i was told if the pulley moves freely that the pump is safe )

3, the pulley did have a very very slight amount of play back and fourth...

4. when i try turning the wheel to the right its horrible and at the very last turning radius ammount there loud humming sound....

5. turning the wheel back to the left is a bit easier, but it feels like im hitting air pockets or some ****...

6. belt is brand new...

7. i ran my steering rack MT style for a while (4 months)...she had fluid in the rack, but still...

8. when i was running my rack MT style...it was never that hard to turn the car....my hands and fore arms where shaking...

9. when i re installed the belt to day and added some fluid i didnt notice any change from earlier in the morning...

10: when the engine was on the cap of the P/S reservoir it had a **** load of white bubble come from it and at the reservoi filling point the fluid rose up high , bout an 1/8 or almost so from spilling over the edge...when i turn it off,,, it would drop almost to teh bottom

anything else i can provide lemme know

so i dunno... anything u guys can tell me on this would rock...

Something is definitely shot. Whether its the pump or the rack I am not sure, but something is definitely shot. You might post this in 240 tech, they probably know more than our engine-specific forum.

I would seriously have to suspect the steering rack. Largely because you said yourself you ran without P/S for 4 months. Plus, if the fluid is overflowing out of the resevoir, then the pump is definately pushing the fluid, its just not going where its supposed to go. And, since there is noise when you turn the wheel to one side, but not the other, i would seriously be thinking rack. How would the pump know which way the wheels are turning? (It doesnt).

Rack isnt cheap, but its a WHOLE lot easier to find than a CA18DET P/S pump, and its almost as easy to change.
