Ok..so I have a lifter tick.......or whatever it is.......damn it's annoying..makes the car sound ****ty.....get's faster when you rev or accelerate. Damn it! I even jacked the car up and changed the oil again...2nd time in 1 month..just to add LUCAS Oil Additive stuff..the Full Synthetic stuff...so after about 50.00 in stuff to change the oil.......it still ticks.......the other day it didn't tick......for awhile.......then tick tick tick tick again! Damn it.....what do i need to do to fix it? How hard a fix is it? Should I just take it to these Z Doc guys that fix Z cars? How much do you think it will run to fix it? Damn ticking!

You should run a compression test on it...it wont tell you what the problem is but itll give you an idea. Z labor isn't cheap at all by any means.

First, are you sure it's lifter tick? My injectors make more noise than my lifters. Take a long screwdriver and put it to your ear and then to the injectors and valve covers. You will hear if the noise is coming from the lifters or injectors. Then, check to see if the sound is actually louder at the front of the motor, under the t-belt covers. A ticking noise from there will mean that your vtc springs might need replacing. (this is usually done when the t-belt gets replaced).

Lastly, if the noise is coming from the lifters, it's usually because the lifters are sticking which is caused by oil residue and varnish buildup. One of the old tricks to clean out the engine internals is to run a quart of ATF in the motor for a few minutes before changing the oil. Newer methods include adding Marvel Mystery Oil or Seafoam to the oil to clean things out. These methods are known to reduce the lifter tick in our motors. (it's not a cure-all tho)

yeah it comes from the passengers side of the intake plenum. It did it right when I got the car...Then I changed the spark plugs and it stopped for awhile.......now it's back.....maybe i have a bad injector

I add in a half bottle of Sea-foam to my oil at every oil change. Bought a Z with 130K on it. I'm on the 3rd oil change and it's worked so far. A little experiment I've been messing around with. I have noticed a significant lowering of lifter chatter.

The hydraulic lifters generate a lot of gunk in them over time, usually from carbon deposits/dirt/grime. This stuff is usually very thick and nasty. Other than replacing hydraulic lifters, there is an option to rebuild them but it is a little involved. I can throw up a link if interested, but I would opt to replace personally if you have the opportunity.

Try adding Marvel Mystery Oil to the oil 200 miles before next oil change. This will breakup the deposits inside the lifters, hopefully.

As lifter are $32 each to replace, rebuilding them is another good option if your comfortable getting the lifters out of the car yourself.
