In Driver's Ed, we were always taught to drive with our hands in the "10 and 2" position. Mac Demere, of Popular Mechanics magazine and B.R.A.K.E.S. teen driving school, says that's wrong and could actually cause you more harm in case of an accident.

Also in the article, 3 other things you didn't learn in driver's ed...like how to use ABS properly, keeping your calm, and how to achieve / maintain reaction time.

So, tell the truth, where do you put your hands when driving?

One hand on your girlfri....wait. Actually ,10-2 was pre-air bags. For the airbag era, it's now taught 9-3, though some teach 8-4.

12. I drive most of the time with the right hand at 12, thumb not wrapped around the wheel and the left hand on the shifter. I will go to 10 and 2 when driving in a spirited fashion. I don't need to worry about airbag deployment, I don't have them nor would I want one.

I thought this post was about making out with a skinny chic.

Left hand at 12, thumb not wrapped, and right hand on the shifter. If righty needs to get involved in steering, I usually got 9 - 3. But it's more like 12 and 6, cause it's only for hard cornering.

Depends on what I'm driving.

Typical 3 spoke wheel, 9 and 3, same goes with 4 spoke.

When I'm driving the company F150....8:35 cause it's annoying.

Agreed. It depends on the situation. During normal driving I either have my left or right hand at 12 or 6, while the other is on the shifter or hanging out the window (driver's tan FTW!).

Spirited driving and racing results in my hands being ALL OVER THE PLACE depending on the corner, and the fact that the wheel is turning and whatnot.

In an auto, I'm almost always at 10 and 2 because I'm a control freak.

Nardi wheel places em slightly higher.

My left hand is at 12 or 6 when driving a car with a manual transmission.
Otherwise, I'm usually at 10 and 2 or resting my right hand on the shifter and my left elbow on the arm rest with my thumb or a couple of fingers between the left two spokes on a 4 spoke steering wheel.
If there are occupants, I'm not as relaxed, its a pretty solid 10-2.

12 and shifter/ arm-out-the-window, or 9/3. Everything else bugs me. Also, I hate the shape of Saturn steering wheels, and early to mid-'90s Ford wheels. They leave absolutely nowhere good to place your hands. Especially the early '90s Fords.

EDIT: I also like to use the left/right approach. Though I don't think there are many variations to that one:

it varies. can have the right hand at 3 o'clock with elbow in window, at 5 or sometimes at 12. My left is usually on the shifter. the only time i have both hands on the wheel (9 and 3) is when turning/changing lanes or around noticeable crappy drivers.
