Actually the term Kiwi is in direct reference to the Kiwi Bird which is native to NZ and is the country's national animal much like the bald eagle in the US or the sewer rat in France The Kiwifruit is actually native to China but was introduced to Kiwiland (NZ) in the early 20th century during colonization, it is also named such after the bird.
