I looked at a BRZ, I really wanted one. The problem I had was justifying buying it when for the same price I could have a Miata.

It's because some clever lad at Toyota and Subaru figured out some of us are going to slap our own wheel preference on there and would appreciate not paying for factory alloy wheels we are'nt going to use. Subtle stuff like that tells me THEY ARE LISTENING! :poke: NISSAN.

Honestly, I could give a crap less what this car looks like. I've never understood why it was a big deal. I like the look of the BRZ better, but then I had to ask myself, "Am I really going to base a $30k purchase on aesthetics?" And the answer was no. I don't like red cars either, but since it had been sitting in the showroom for 6 months I got them to sell me a Grand Touring with a power hard top for $26k. This decision was made for performance. The BRZ just isn't as fun.

If Mazda had the new Roadster out next year it would be in the conversation. The NC is not. I just can't get excited about the Z32 Miata. The NB is sweet, looks like a naked chick; but I'm looking at a new car. I require performance first, looks, close, but still second. If the car can't get the job done, I pass it by. If It can, but looks like hot buttered a**, it's going to have to perform on some godlike level for me to tolerate the ugly. The current roaster passes the first test, but fails the second, for me at least; "beauty" is a personal opinion. The BRZ passes both tests.

We will see if I still think so after I beat on the rental.

I love the NB. It's my favorite Miata body. I think the NA looks like they took a 2 seater kayak and put wheels on it. I don't dislike the NC.

I just couldn't let looks be the reason I bought or didn't buy a car. They're machines. They're tools. I care what they do, not what they look like. For me if it does that AND looks good then it's a car I'm going to chase after. The only cars that do that for me are out of this price range. The BRZ looks amazing, but IMO does not drive as well as the Miata. If I bought it, I'd be choosing style over function and that's not something I do.

I love my NB, and enjoy driving it more than anything I've owned - including a 400-hp C5 and a supercharged G coupe.

I will admit, a mildly-modded BRZ always turns my head on the road, and after driving a few (specifically Seth's), I wouldn't turn one down.

I didn't mean to come across like I don't like the BRZ. It has a lot of upsides. It's a great car and it was a solid contender. I just liked driving the Miata better.

It's more flingable than the BRZ. I can just fling the Miata around corners at stupid speeds. I mean stupid. And when it goes too far it skips sideways like a stone on water and flings itself forward. The crazy thing is, the NC's TC and stability control, as soon as I got it skipping, it Skips once, and grabs and shoots forward. I laughed like Rick James the first time it happened.

The BRZ is like any small coupe, but it's not a roadster. It's fun, it slides around, but I don't like sliding around. It's got charm, and it would be fun to drive on a lot of roads. The problem is the Miata is fun on every road. The BRZ has a back seat and more space and would be easier to live with. The BRZ is like a lot of cars I've known and loved and that's it's biggest problem. That's not exciting. That's familiar. I'm not at a point in my life where I'm buying cars for familiarity.

Do the Jap cars have the same dip in torque @ 4K that the US owners complain about? I learned the hard way that an odd powerband can make you hate a car you would otherwise love. The Mazdaspeed Protege suffers from a poor torque curve and due to poor engine tuning on Mazda's part. It makes what could be a car you love into a car you love... sometimes.

Yes, the "jap" cars have it. :slap:

Want to see a magic trick?

I have here a perfectly normal blue line, yes? Now, I'll just install an unequal length exhuast manifold. I give you a purple line. Cool, huh?

Image

See that cluster**** at the OEM collector? Looks sort of suspicious, don't it?

Image

I theorized it was poor timing of exhaust pulses. Having messed with two strokes I can appreciate how significant that is. Looks like Tomei had the same idea and solved the problem. :dblthumb:

Image

I always hated that "buda-buda" exhuast note on the old unequal length manifold-equipped Scoobies, but it looks like their motors, at least the F20, like it. Crap.

Greddy fixed it too. BOY, did they fix it.

Image

They fixed it like I like to fix things, too. BOOST, whoop whoop whoop!

Man, I love that sound. There are only two four-cylinder motors in history I actually LIKE the sound of. Both happen to be flat fours:

Also:
Huzzah for the FA20 finally moving to a chain-timed valvetrain. It's not like it's 2014 or anything. Ironic that it finally happened in an engine developed in cooperation with Toyota, who stubbornly used rubberbands to time their V8s until just a couple years ago because they're Toyota and they do what they want. Nothing like unnecessary, costly periodic maintenance to make a purchase appealing!

I noticed that too. The only thing worse than an EJ20 timing belt is a VG30DETT. BIG thumbs up going to a chain.

I didn't know it was such a simple thing to fix! That makes that car way more appealing to me now!

Three cars that are at the forefront of my mind when I thing "driver's car" and while there are many more, no disrespect to the other great cars worth of the title, all three of these are at the top of MY list of cars I would want to test drive. I have to say, these guys said everything I was thinking and the results are exactly what I expected them to be.

The S2000, if it were still sold and I could afford it would be IT. That old S2000s perform like they do is testament to Honda's lost commitment to the art of a driving machine, that are still tight and performing after all these years proves they didn't cut corners on build quality either. They were worth it when new, they are worth in now in the used market. That's top notch escort. It has more capability than you do and people know you are a high roller.

The RX8 would win me over, I love rotaries and I think Mazda's commitment to the car was on par with Honda's on theirs, but it's JUST SO FRIGGIN UGLY! Even if it was turbo I would still not want one. I'd get an FD and repair it before trying to justify the ugly, albeit capable vehicle. It's like an old p0rn star. She will rock you, but you want to turn out the light and try to keep your friends from seeing you.

The FRS, to be fair, even though it was built to be a driver's car, I think the target was somewhat different. The S2000 is finished, it's perfect. IMO It was aimed at more mature drivers who want to roll off the lot and immediately ride the razor's edge. The FRS seems like a starter driver's car. It's good, but not great. It can achieve greatness, but it will have to be upgraded. I think it was aimed at newer drivers and people looking for a little "fun." This is a drunk college chick who wants to party. She's not as experienced, you can't take her to a fancy restaurant, but she is up for anything and has the potential to grow into something great. The most likely one to get you into trouble.

I think that's what I'm looking for. I'm looking to get seriously back into driving, but I'm not ready to completely grow up. I think that's why if I was able to afford a Porsche, I'd be buying a Caymen instead of a 911. A lamborghini, a Gallardo instead of an Aventador. I'm just like that. :gotme

TMS, I don't know what kind of budget you're looking at, but having owned a couple S2ks, the 135i is a venerable substitute, although not a roadster. Both put big smiles on my face. I miss my S2k at times.

The 1 series BMW is nice, but if it's not the M I don't want it and I cannot afford an M. That. and I really want, for once in my life, to own a new car. There is nothing out there that excites me at a price I can afford except this. I'll beat on it when i rent one and see if it's got the things I'm looking for. If it doesn't I'll give up and finish setting up my FC.
