Yeah this whole time I was planning on keeping the air conditioning on my KA-T project car... I was kinda excited about it cause I had never owned a car that had A/C before and I thought it would be pretty sweet.

...Turns out that A/C is actually not sweet, it is a pain in the ***.

-The compressor bracket goes down pretty far, covering some of the oil pain to the point where it was blocking the bung for my turbo oil return...-The compressor is gigantic: heavy and in the freakin way. My oil return hose was not long enough to go around the compressor itself.-All the evap lines are ugly and get in the way of various things on the exhaust side.-The A/C condensor (radiator looking thing) blocks a TON of airflow that would otherwise flow directly into my radiator though this big gaping hole.-The filter/dryer thing is ugly and looks like an ice cream cone.

So yeah, I decided to just say screw it and take it out tonight: the engine bay is much much nicer looking now.

How many of you KA-T guys decided to keep (or get rid of) your AC?

lol, I am in the same boat right now. I have a/c right now, but don't use it at all. Besides the car shacks and goes crazy whenever it is on. During Christmas break I am going to try to get as much of it off and put the compressor in my brother's 240.

It's pretty easy to take out--- just watch out for that R12 refrigerant.... it kinda sneaks up on ya if you dont pay attention

Nice work......rip that crap out of there! I took mine out and have not regretted it at all. I never liked using it cause it takes so much power to turn that beast of a compressor. Mind you, when I had it I only used it a few days out of the year. There is still the evaporator that is under the dash, if you want to remove that it will be weight savings in the ~10lb range.

I should weigh all the parts from the a/c, I bet it would be between 60-70lbs.

i still have mine in the car. im very tempted to take it out all the time. i think i might have used it once this past summer. my main reason for keeping it was when i eventually sell the car it will be nice to say its still there.

one day i will prolly do the same thing and say **** it

My A/C works great. My first 240 didn't. It was a tight fit but no troubles.

I still have it in, but for some reason it doesn't work very well now. Probably because the hose run right next to my downpipe, but oh well, I'll find a way around that.

Meh, I'm not even turbo yet and I cut the AC belt a long time ago. I had to cut it when I was replacing belts, but was just to lazy to put a new one on even though I had it, since I never use it anyway.

Mine blows nice and cold, and even though I rarely use it, I still have it in there...It's a nice feature to have if you're going out with a girl on a hot, humid summer night and they want to know why the hell the AC isn't on...

I have an all-aluminum 2.1" thick koyo radiator so I don't need to worry about overheating due to the AC condensor blocking airflow...

mine works when driving but when I am stopped/ideling it will kill my car, I still have a few bugs to work out with my kat I guess. I just got done putting the iacv line to my cold pipe and I cant tell it is doing anything????!!?! A/c played no problems installing my turbo!

Wow this is an old thread.

Anywho, I'm keeping A/C in my KA-T. I dyno'd the same hp and torque with the A/C running so I see no need in being uncomfortable in the summer. 400rwhp + A/C = heaven

Mine worked when I had my KAT but I lost it during the SR swap, kinda sucks not having AC but it is alot of weight and extra junk.

Haha Foster, I think you may reconsider this after the next 5 days (which are supposed to be ~93+ and sunny!)

I kept mine, and am damn glad I did. I couldn't imagine driving a daily driver (even though mine isn't) without it. Still blows so cold too...I'm sure me personally could live without it, but try explaining to a date who's sweating profusely the merits of weight-saving and ease of turbo plumbing by nixing the AC....

pulled it. Much cleaner looking engine bay in my opinion. If the GF want to ***** either just drop the windows and drive faster or tell her to walk.

Haha, rebirth of an OLD thread-- almost two years old now! wow...

These days I have AC for the daily driver, and the KA-T car (well, KA-T car in progress) has no AC... gets in the way too much.

What is this A/C you speak of????? Funny at cruising and idle it blew cold. But if I hit boost in put out hot air, had to switch it to the floorboard so I didn't catch on fire lol... Kept the heater core in case car starts to overheat I can let it vent....

Hey, have you weighed all of the AC crap yet? Just wondering how much weight savings that would be.

Even if it's 100lbs of A/C crap (which it's not). That's 0.1 in the 1/4, or being comfortable on a hot day. I'd rather be comfortable.

i definitely have mine and man was it a pain to keep. so i run a sidemount mani and thanks to the design of a non turbo'd factory engine, the low side port of the a/c line just happens to line up perfectly with my return oil point right on my turbo. lol. nonetheless, had to get a custom a/c line built which now relocated that low side port all the way near to the firewall. the new line is wrapped fully in thermotec stuff and has been blowing cold since then.

i agree with the previous posts, girls or g/f or random chicks dont like to sweat...............

Mine stays (until it breaks), what is the point of turbo'ing a car I don't want to drive? Also, in reality an intercooler has more to do with blocking airflow to the condensor than the condensor does to blocking air to the radiator. Basically, A/C performance will suffer before engine cooling will.

I have no a/c, emissions, or engine to speak of in the Ka-t machine, at least for another month or two
