ok so heres the deal...

I got into my car to listen to a new cd, and i heard a pop and no bass...

immediately, i opened the hood, and everything looked cool... except one of my battery cables was somehow loose... so i re-tightened it and hopped back in.

still no bass.

the inline fuse was good, the wiring is clean, *lifts amplifier* ooooh that doesnt ****ing smell good. the fuses on the amp itself however are good.

i open up the amp and low and behold, one of the op-amps is done. everything else looks cool though. There was a good amount of heat that dissipated, and of course the smell. everything else looked cool.

my question:Should i be able to replace the op-amp and save about 2-300 bucks on a new amp? Its a Quantum Audio QA1800D, with two 10" diamond d3's.

Im thinking there was some kind of power spike because of the battery cable, but no fuses were blown whatsoever... any intelligent info would be appreciated.

Hmm, that's an uncommon occurence.

Depending on the model of the OP-amp you should be able to find it online for under $20.

actually i just took the amp to school to show to one of my studio maintenance instructor gurus, and she said its either a voltage regulator (which supports my guess that there was a power spike, even if the fuses are still good) or a rectifier.

either way she said its a $4-5 part and i should totally go for replacing it.

so now to fix the initial problem... i intend to post in the correct forum with this as soon as i get a pic-

the secondary cable that attaches to my positive battery terminal has been messed up for some time now... i swapped the terminals and the tab didnt fit anymore. since the car wont start without this wire, i modded the brass tab on the end of it (that little black box thingy... see why i need a pic? haha) and reattached it. it broke, so now i have it taped just to be able to start the car when i need to. im pretty sure the jerry-rig electrical tape caused a spike that somehow broke what im guessing is a voltage regulator in the amp.

man i could have saved the frustration, couldn't i?
