What do you mean by "kept oil". I am not sure what you are referring to.
How much oil did you put int? You said "the dipstick is covered in oil" - how long do you let the car sit before you check the level?
Let the car sit for a few hours on level ground and check it again - the oil level should be between the low and high marks. If too low, add oil, and if too high, then you need to remove some - perhaps from the drain plug?
Full synthetic will not hurt your engine. I have over 120k miles on my M and it has seen a steady diet of synthetic oil since 10k miles.
If you are truly concerned, have the car taken to a dealer and looked at. Use a flat bed tow (never, ever tow your X model with any set of wheels - front or back - on the ground!) to avoid damaging your transmission.
