Nice reasoning there!!

Check for battery cable fit to battery if its loose or corroded resecure it, if thats ok check the ground lug on the neg cable see if its connected properly to the body of the car and at the engine. if those check ok move to the body grounds for the ecm. In that order. I had a car bite me in the a$$ yesterday that was doing exactly the same thing and i skipped right past the neg battery cable connection points and went right to the grounds under the dash, got a little ahead of myself. the ultimate problem was the body lug on the neg cable was not even bolted to the body . attached it and it was good to go.

I'd check the MAF connection as well. If you disconnect the MAF, the ECU prevents it from revving past 2500 RPM's as well. Some kind of a safe mode. There may be other reasons the ECU can go into safemode, but I only know of the MAF being one.

accordign to my manual a 2500 cut is a malfuntioning MAF, at least the ECU thinks its bad so its shutting you down then.

or loss of ground to maf will have the same effect. do the full maf check on all three lines in particular the ground circuit. with it hooked up and running you should have no more then .02v drop between the maf ground and the intake manifold surface
