If you keep having problems there is a little tool I have that you screw into chamber1 (after you remove the spark plug that is) and you manually turn the crank.. when the tool fish goes all the way up youre at TDC, no way to mess that up.

wellmy problem was multi facetedfirstwe didnt set tdc before taking the cams off and upper timing chain offwe installed the new head gasketbolted the head downand i could not see the timing notches on the timing pulley

we found them eventuallyand had lots of fun manually trying to set tdc by cranking the starter a million times untilwe could get it to line up

right now it is at 10 btdc i thinkthere are 5 notches on the pulleyi think these are 0, 5, 10, 15, 20i have it right on 10

we also measured the stroke out with a tape measureit was almost dead on what seems to be 3.75 (should be 3.78 for stroke)

im having a slight proble now just finishingi need to get the upper timing chain bck on and get the cams bolted in where they need to be

im going to try to bolt the cams down firsttake the sprockets of the cams (maaybe?) or just unbolt the timing chain tensioner pulley under the two camsnot sure

can anyone help

ill post some photos so u can see where im at....

Heh I did this on my s13 after the rebuild, Ill give you some tips. First get it at TDC. unbolt the cam sprockets then unbolt the game girdles, get the cams off. This is the easiest way, atleast for me. make sure you use the marks on the chain to line this up against the marks on the cam sprockets, the gear BEHIND the dizzy (thing in the middle) for the top chain, and the marks for the lower chain against the dizzy. Thats the most important part, lineup those damn links. The upper chain is gonna be tight when you try to put the cams back on.. just bolt the sprockets on the cams with the chain on then feed the cams back on the head. Get your distributor back on, make sure you line the teeth up, its tough, prolly take u a few times. Trick i used was take the cap off, line up the teeth on the gear and hold the rotor with your hand when you place it in.

Forgot to add, get the tensioners off and the guides, makes it easier too.
