Alright, I really can't take it anymore. These popups are driving me insane!!! Can anyone recommend a good free popup blocker if any such thing exists. The IE blocker just doesn't cut it. The title bar says CiD: "..." (fill in the blank) on the popups. Any suggestions on what that might be also? Thanks guys!

1. Try using Firefox. Better popup blocker.

2. Download and Google toolbar. Has a pop up blocker for IE.

Thanks dude, I have firefox, just never use it. I'll give it a try. And I actually have the Google toolbar and it doesn't seem to be doing the trick. Any idea what the CiD thing is all about? Thats the only popup I get and at least one comes up per page.

Hmmm ... maybe it is turned off? Or turned off for the site (is it here at NICO?) that is giving you the popups?

I have no idea what that is, unfortunately!

Ah! The CiD popup is apparently a spyware program from some site: http://sg.answers.yahoo.com/qu...AZKzU.

Try following the instructions in that info.

Use firefox or opera. I haven't had a problem with popups since I switched away from IE.

Agreed! But, in this case, I think he has spyware on his system ... apparently, the CiD popup is a known problem (I did not know it, but a search found some info on it).

I recommend adblockplus for firefox and stop using IE... don't remember the link just google it, grab a copy of adaware se first at lavasoft.com and run a scan. then download process explorer http://www.microsoft.com/techn....mspx to make sure you got no background processes running

ok..the ONLY reason and I mean the ONLY reason your pop-ups are annoying are because they are there because you have either a virus, trojan, spyware, malware or all of them combined.

There is no reason to download this or that liek google toolbar or a popup blocker. The only pop ups you might should see are ads from sites like MSNBC or NICO...but they dont have any. So you should rarely see any at all on a clean system.

Do this..and you should be clean. Follow these steps.. These are my recommendations..some on this site may disagree with some of the programs but I have used them all and recommend them fearlessly to ALL of my customers! Not to mention I install all of these on a customers new machine.

AVG-Free antivirus-get rid of anything you have now like nortons or mcafee. Go to http://free.grisoft.com/ and download the free basic protection.

AVG-Free Antispyware- Awesome program helps with trojans, spyware, and malware. Can be found here also: http://free.grisoft.com/

Spybot Search and Destroy: [URL]http://security.kolla.de. Go to the download section and download it.

Lavasofts Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/pro...e.php

And last but not lease download this firewall from Zone labs. Called Zone alarm: Click on the link for "I only want basic Protection"http://www.zonealarm.com/store...d.jsp

By the way these are all free. Once you get them run ALL UPDATES (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)

Run all these under normal windows startup...meaning just install and run. There is nothing to run for zone alarm FYI.

Clean anything it finds...

Then go into safe mode. (reboot hit F8 right after the initial boot screen) the choose safe mode. Go in under your normal account. Not admin. Then run all the programs again. Clean anything it finds.

Then go back to normal start up and run the programs agian. And clean all items found.

Do this until it finds nothing at all. Sometimes items will show up again and you will need to re-run the programs. If you need more help post back!!

Thanks..

oh and im not responsible for any or all mishaps, failures, blow ups, fires, killings, terrorlst acts, bomb threats, scaring children, or disturbing the peach causedby my computer advice. Thanks!!

Firewalls and virus software have nothing to do with popups. Well, firewalls can help prevent software generating them to get on in the first place but they cause more headaches than they're worth and eat up resources. Its simpler just to scan with a spyware remover. In fact, scan with 2. Unlike antivirus programs (another thing you really don't need if you browse responsibly, but its good to have just in case), spyware cleaners do not attack eachother so you can have more than one, and no matter which one you use, you'll always find some things slipping through the cracks that another one will catch.

There is absolutely ZERO reason to screw around in safe mode or the registry unless a) the other solutions don't work, and b) you know what you're doing. Registries are better protected than they used to be but one mistake in the wrong place can still cripple you.

And yeah, using an alternative to IE is a good idea. Firefox is probably the best IMO, but opera works nicely as well. The main (and by far not the only) problem with IE is that its basically a part of windows, so combines withits already weak security, IE acts as a road straight into windows settings.
