I was making decisions on whether VERSA or FIT to buy. Finally I got myself into a FIT test drive, and the very second I sit in the FIT, I knew I am getting a VERSA for sure. First..let me say this, it's overpriced.....the dealer is asking about 19000..............c'mon.. for a 1.5L car? i can get a camry/altima/accord for that price. Second,,, the FIT doesn't have armrest!!!not even an optional one; they just don't have it. Third, the interior space is way smaller than Versa, and although they do have MAGICAL folding system for their seats...but so what???so my mind finally sets on versa now,, and as I previously mentioned.....I really want a SL CVT with Convenience pkg and sports pkg. The sales was willing to give me 16799 + TAX for the deal..........anyways.....anyone agrees with me on this FIT vs Versa thread, respond!

1st post!Well I can't vouch for reliability, since Honda pretty much takes the cake (with Toyota) for longevity. But for features and pricing, the Versa is the way to go in my opinion.

You see those things on the road and it makes you smile inside, kind of the same effect the Smart car does. It's just too small. The echo as well, by the way.

If you get Consumer Reports, you'll notice that the Honda Fit gets the best rating for the economy car category. The Versa is too new and so they don't have sufficient data for it. Their little overview is pretty standard, they like the car but they think it has average agility and fuel economy.

19k for a fit?!

before I got my versa, I had a fit orderedfully loaded sport package for 17.1k w/ taxes

but now I have the lowest end model of the versa, which I honestly don't mind at all

but personally I really admire the interior and exterior design of the fit, except for the *** and the overall swoop of the hatch... in my opinion, nissan takes the cake w/ that one (especially w/ the versa and the murano)

I'm pretty happy with my Fit, though I generally preferred the Versa SL car vs. car. Seating wise, the Versa is MUCH more comfortable than the Fit. There isn't a significant difference in leg room and head room on the drivers side, my knees were pretty crowded in the Versa's passenger seat due to the huge glove compartment. I love the Fits seating configurations, but likewise loved the smooth CVT in the Versa.

Safety was a big deal in my decision making process. The inability to get the Versa SL with ABS I ordered and the sudden availability of a Fit with standard ABS pretty much sealed the Versa's fate with me. You can only wait so long, especially when the dealer has no idea if the car will ever come (and it eventually did...).

You have obviously encountered the infamous 'market adjustment' which many Honda dealers are tacking on Fits to take advantage of low supply and high demand. I test drove a Fit Sport that was marked up above $20,000 after market adjustment and while I passed on the dealer's gouge someone else snapped up the car a day later.

My cousin bought a Fit just a few months ago and he's already dissatisfied. He said the Fit gets significantly less MPG than what is on the sticker (already factored in the difference between what's on the sticker and what is actual). He took the car to the dealer and they just give him a half-assed answer saying the car is still in it's break-in period. Bullshiit because he already drove about 8k miles on the car.

Although I must say...the magical back seat folding feature is quite nice....

I was a new grad a little over 3 years ago in your same situation, making around the same money. Except my 83' Honda was on it last legs when I bought my first new vehicle. It limped to the dealership and busted a 4th coolant hose when I turned into the dealer's lot. I walked in and told the sales guy that I definitely was buying a vehicle today since it wasn't possible to drive my current car home . If you can stay in your current car and can save money, this would be the best route. The more you save now, the less you'll finance in the future. If you have to buy now, buy slightly less than you can afford. Although I could afford the $400 a month payment and insurance on my truck, it didn't leave much extra money over for modifications I wanted and general maintenance back then. Now, all that's changed 180 degrees, but there were a lot of months.

I'm in about the same position, though I don't graduate for another year, but that's about what I should be making, in fact that's what my boyfriend will be making starting January first. So I'm thinking about getting a Versa. But I currently drive a car that is much older than the one you have. I figure that if I'm going to spend the money and take out a loan, I may as well get a new car that I'm really going to enjoy having...

I'd recommend waiting a year, maybe even two since your Sentra is not that old. (Unless your Sentra has over 80k miles or it is breaking down all the time.....). There is always plenty of things to spend a new income on. Over the years, the BEST investment, bar none, has been the home we've lived in (and then sold). You may want to think about putting some money away for a down payment on a home. I'd say treat yourself to a couple toys (perhaps electronic gadgets?) but hold off on big spending decisions till that first raise.

Arim,

Nah, you need to wait. As long as the Sentra is getting you where you need to go, keep it. Start saving your money, make sure you have no credit card debt, and have your own place. THEN think about getting a new car.

^^ What OK said. I don't graduate for a couple years, mostly due to a 16 month internship I start in May. I'll be making about the same salary as you (in CDN, not US), and I can say that my wife and I wouldn't have bought our V if we didn't already have a house.

If your Sentra is treating you well, stick with it. My first car (truck) was an '82 Datsun 4x4. It lasted for 300,000+ km and only required regular maintenance (oil and the like, with the occasional clutch). My Dad bought it new, and when I started to drive it became mine, so I knew it had been taken care of. If you bought your sentra new (it must have been pretty close), and if you treat it well, I'm sure it'll last you until you have enough saved for a house/condo.

Home ownership FTW

I really appreciate the advices you guys gave me! I think I will go ahead and save some money first.......since I still have a graduate school to go to (in 2 years). I just hate my sentra but hey, it runs smooth and well....it gave me 331 miles on my last tank(roughly 10-11 gallons),I just really like VERSA because I was already expecting it when they made the announcement on nissanusa.com (about 2 years ago). But you guys are right.. .I should buy a condo first.....thanks ya'll

Waiting a couple of years may not be bad and may work to your advantage. By that time Nissan will have a couple of model years of Versa's on the road and there shouldn't be any major issues like the TPMS bug earlier. By then, there should be a Versa SE-R and I'm hoping it will be the concept car from earlier.

I just joined this group as I am trying to make a very informed decision. I am ready for a new vehicle and found out about the Honda Fit on the web. Our local dealership finally got 1 in and test drove it. Loved it immediately but was not crazy for the pricing right at $17,000.00 for the Fit Sport. You can not locate base models in my area. So I decided since the Fit is so hard to get I would go out shopping yesterday. Went to Toyota and hated the Yaris - went to Chevy looking at Cobalt did not like it either. Went to the Nissan dealership and thought the Versa looked a little like the Fit but was larger inside. Test drove the Versa and I was impressed by the way it drove and handled. I also loved the pricing which is a lot of car for the base price. Now I am confused as to what is the best way to go. I will not be doing any long distance hauling, just to and from work which is only a few miles so I want something with great gas milage and I am looking for the fun factor! I have driven a truck or a station wagon forever because we use to show horses. We no longer do the showing so I can concentrate on form and function - So please Versa owners tell me what you like about your car and what you don't like about the car. I am trying to make a decision because since I drove the Versa the Fit doesn't make me wonder if it is worth the extra $4,000.00 - I have only driven Chevy and Ford products but it seems that some people on the web have had trouble with their Versa and complain about things going wrong only after a few hundred miles driven. I know that Honda is great for long running vehicles and very little engine problems but is it worth it? The best thing is that Nissan has several on the lot and I won't have to wait for months to get the car.

Thanks for any opinions on this topic.

Over 50,000 miles, there is a $943 difference in fuel if the Versa gets 28mpg and the Fit gets 34mpg. IF you only drive around town, get the Versa S with the Power package and skip the other frills.... take the $3,000 you save and go buy a big plasma TV and stick the other $1000 in in the bank to pay for the extra gas you'll use.

Yeah, and if you drive about 10,000 miles a year, which is around average, then that's only $188.60 a year. That means you need to make about $3.93 a week to pay for the extra gas.

I drive a Fit, and like it a lot. But it is not worth extra $4,000 (or 3 or 2 or 1 grand, for that matter). No way. I can find all sorts of ways to use that extra money. In our case, we were not in a situation to have to pay extra for our Fit, so it was not an issue. But if we had been, we would not have shelled out that extra money. The Fit is a wonderful little car, but there is a point, I believe, that "wonderful" is no longer worth all that much money.
