Two dead cylinders 2/3 and I have 20 degrees of slack in the timing chain.

What are some nice mods I can get done (cam) while the top end is getting done?

Outside of an engine swap. (Chevy v8 sitting on engine stand)

Dont bother, its a waist of money to do anything other than cams on a stock head if you dont plan on boosting it. Sure you could get a 3 angle valve job or titanium valves, beefy valve springs, port and polish the intake and exhaust ports.. But for over 1000 dollars you would see mabey a 10-20 hp gain on a NA motor..

So your thread is just a little vauge, your going to rebuild the bottom end with stock compression? Are you planing on staying N/A?

Give us some more info on your goals and we might be able to help you better.

You are right I was way too vague.

Before I spend the money (tight budget wife & 4 kids) I know you guys have so much more experience than I do.

Its a bone stock 89 240 ka SOHC.

Basically I want to just tool around and use it as a clean and reliable driver for my son who will be driving in two years.

Does the top end rebuild make sense or just go for the swap (s) ?

For your goals of a daily driver i would just say keep things close to stock. It makes no sense to do a bunch of head work if your not looking for alot of power. It would be a good idea to have a machine shop put in new valve seals, that would freshen up your engine, and give it a long life. Anything over that though and your just pissing away cash.

Also, since you plan on giving the car to your son as his first, you dont want him having something fast. A stock KA has enough power behind it to make it a fun car without being dangerous. Just do a stock rebuild, maybe do some bolt on mods like headers, exhaust, intake. Cars are the leading killer of teens..

No real reason to swap anything, i mean a SR is a great daily driver but again, IMO thats to much power for a kids first car. I knew way to many kids who got a fast car as their first, trashed it, and got a civic as their second. Id much rather have the fast car second, after i grew up a bit, and knew how to drive. Just my opinion on this stuff though, its up to you.
