I bought a used DE for only $100... now what?

Yesterday I purchased a used "long block" KA24DE, a motor stand and engine hoist all for only $200. I was told that the engine was in the process of being rebuilt. That the block already has JE pistons in it and the that head is in good condition. There are no cams on the head... but i should be able to use the one's from my motor, right?

My plan is to get a full gasket set and timing chain kit and replace as much stuff as i can. What i need is some guidance as to which kits to purchase or avoid, typical rookie mistakes, and general advice on the process.

The car is just a daily driver (stock 93 240sx vert) that gets way better mpg than my other vehicles (all V8). I'm trying to get her back on the road as quickly and inexpensively as i can. Any opinions/advice would be appreciated.

personally, id disassemble everything. then, start from scratch and measure and inspect everything. never leave anything up to taking someones word for it. how do you know its got that stuff in it? how you know the crank isnt F'd and there just tryin to ditch it? or, if you want, give it up to chance.i advice aftermarket headgasket, like mr.gasketfor daily, oem will have most reliability. take your time, dont rush anything. research and know what your doin. goodluck

lucky find. i just spent $400+ on my set of pistons for my project.

how's this coming so far?

as far as advice, follow the FSM explicitly. try to stick with OEM as much as possible. don't forget your assembly lube (cams/etc). i would consider checking crankshaft clearances yourself, you never know if the person in the process of building the thing was a knucklehead.

clean your bolts thoroughly, and use the gray RTV for everything that needs it.

Since the engine didn't come with cams, I took the head & cams off my original motor and had it all reworked.

Everything is reassembled and I'm hoping to drop it back into the car tonight. The only real goof I've made so far is that i didn't pack the oil pump to help prime it. I'm researching that issue today.

If this one turns out OK, i may have the courage to try and rebuilt my original motor... maybe.
