I am going to be replacing a cv axle on the passenger side of a 1999 Altima.

I've replaced both cv axles on a 1992 Maxima GXE and I know that I had to drain the transmission fluid prior to removing the axles. Is the process the same on a 1999 Altima SE? Will I have to drain the fluid first? I posted in the 1999-2001 Altima forum but there didn't seem to be many viewers there.

Thanks

Matt

I am almost 100% positive you wont... but what's the worst that will happen, you pull the axle and fluid goes everywhere, and you have to refill it?

I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't let this stop you from doing the job... it'll keep a little suspense in the job

It will probably leak a bit. Be prepared for that to prevent making a mess. But it's definitely not the end of the world if it all leaks out... you can always refill it and kill two birds with one stone.

Well, if it's anything like the Maxima, it'll have a good bit come rushing out unless I drain it first. So, I guess I better. Anybody know about how many quarts I will need to replenish what I drain out? The Maxima had a drain plug on the side, is it the same for this? Thanks

Well, here is an overdue update. I went ahead and placed a pan under the transmission where the half shaft was inserted, pulled the axle without draining the fluid preparing for a mess and to my surprise, nothing came out, not even a drop. I swapped a couple of things over to the rebuilt axle and reinstalled without a problem.
