compression test is also good for buying a used car.check all fluid LEVELS and condition. i'd make sure the car is semi warm.take it for a spin, try to drive it so it tests many different conditions,
engine breaking (also maybe force this with downshift)hard accel downhill / uphill / level*look in rear view during excel and engine breaking and try to note exhaust color.
after some driving park it in a clean , level spot and let it run for a little. Maybe back it up and check for any drips on ground. Also you can recheck fluids after the car has cooled down a bit.
While its on I would suggest looking under the hood while he rev's it, or just manually move the throttle plate. Check for engine movement, exhaust leaks or strange noises.
Even if you find some of these things wrong but they do not seem big to you, anything you mention that is wrong with the car that has not been mentioned by him, almost always leads to a drop in price, although maybe a small one.
Bring a jack and check for frame damage as well.
