It's not unheard of for race teams or manufacturers having difficulty with performance or the timing of their programs to go elsewhere for help. Perhaps the most recent example was in 2004-05 when Chevrolet, which had been struggling with the performance of its in-house developed IRL engine, decided to scrap it and go with a re-badged Cosworth engine. Cosworth, of course, had long been associated with arch-rival Ford.

Which brings us back to the present. After we got the anonymous tip about the non-Lambda engine, we contacted Hyundai who put us in touch with Millen. Millen told us that when it became obvious to the RMR crew that the new Lambda V6 wouldn't be ready in time, they opted for Plan B. Instead of delaying the launch of the car, the decision was made to proceed with a different engine until the Lambda was ready. The closest thing they could find in terms of size was a Nissan VQ35.

According to Millen, he made the decision not to inform Hyundai of the change and he takes full responsibility. Millen said that the crew is working full speed to get the Lambda engine ready and expects to have it in the car within the next two to three events. That means it should be racing by either the New Jersey event on June 6 or the Las Vegas round on July 10.

i wonder how credible of a source autoblog is... cuz i asked a friend who, last saturday after long beach, had mentioned that they weren't using the lambda and even moreso not even a hyundai motor.

is there another source to back this up? i've talked to him and he claims that at this point, he can't say much.

You can polish a turd, it's still a turd.

So basically, they're running a G35 with ugly bodywork.

Way to go, Hyundai - No different from a Chinese knockoff of a Chevy Aveo...

The problem here is that Hyundai is keeping mum about this, and all the KDM fanbois slobbering over the Genesis will think it's running a Korean-made motor... Nope. VQ baby.

The situation is almost similar to Nissan not being able to get the VQ38VHRTT race ready for their JGTC debut of the new R35. Instead, they used the already proven RB26DETT in their R35 JGTC500 shell. I don't see anyone saying that NISMO should have just entered the JGTC series with an R34 body to go along with R34 engine just because the motor doesn't belong in the R35

Don't be so contradictory towards Hyundai. In fact, if you read the article clearly, this is purely RMR's decision and not Hyundai's and they will soon have a race engine based on their mass-produced engine competing in D1, Formula D and al the other various events Rhys Millen plans on entering the car in.

I give credit for Hyundai trying to enter their car and their lambda engine into motorsports despite the other companies that do have racing heritage. Every car manufacturer has to start their racing history somewhere.

By saying that, you are implying that Hyundai had a hand in using the VQ on their Genesis Coupe chassis. Millen did what he thought was practical to do so he himself can enter the competition. No sense for him sacrificing his standings in Formula D because of the delay of the engine.

If you can remember back in 2004, he went through the same stress with his Pontiac GTO in the D1 series. He barely got the car ready for competition and couldn't even make it to the Top 8.

He competed with the Genesis Coupe that had the VQ and didn't even get into the top 16 of Formula D. The car as a whole is not ready as well. But this is in no way discrediting the mass-produced Genesis Coupe. Millen and his team are having a hard time getting the overall car ready for Drift competition and this in itself takes a lot of testing and fine tuning. All he wanted to do was run in the competition. If was given more time, and if Hyundai didn't have a delay in the delivery of their engine, then it would be a different story.

Sorry if this is coming off strong, I just want to portray this at a neutral perspective as well.

Agreed with the polished turd.

However I do have to stand up for Hyundai, at least they are doing something right. The 2.0 turbo version is brilliant.

Meanwhile Toyota and Honda are producing trucks and minivans.

the credibility of the source. i was merely stating that following the long beach event last saturday, i knew the hyundai didn't use a hyundai motor, but had no idea what other motor they could've used. then the autoblog article states it was a vq35. just wanted to know if autoblog was a reputable source.

and my friend, who knows, won't share with me such "sensitive" information.

Abso-fricken-lutely. If it's anything like the VW 4-banger, that engine will become epic.

Off topic but as far as I'm aware Aveo is a Korean designed and made car with Chevy logo slapped on. Made by what's left of Daewoo if I recall correctly.
