Ok. say you have a busted odometer. It's not turning and recording the mileage of the car anymore. You have an extra odometer sitting in an extra dash cluster that you can put in the car. Of course, it reads way off from the first odometer. Like 70,000 on the old one, and say 200,000 on the working one.

Now, given that odometer tampering is illegal, would you be willing to roll the working odometer back to the mileage on the broken one? For the sake of keeping the car recording its original mileage, I think I would.

i don't think that the DMV would have too much of a problem with that, but they might prefer you let a certified shop or something do it. But you have to be careful, they might want to uncertify your milage. If they do that it doesn't matter what you do. When I got my car the odometer had been intermittantantly working for a little bit, and the mileage had been uncertified (got from a dealer so they had to do it legal). But when I brough it home to my state I fixed it and didn't bother to list it on the new registration (maybe a couple hundred miles off, big deal).

cars with true mileage unkown aren't worth anything so i would get that fixed. my friend uses two sets of gauges to keep the milage off his car
