The left turn signal on my 1991 Q45t flashes really fast like they do when one of the bulbs is burned out. I checked and both front and rear bulbs are working.

Is there something that can fool the flasher into beleiving a bulb is burned out, or is it a bad flasher unit.

Finally, are the flasher units similar to domestic cars, a cylinder shaped unit about 2.5" long and plugs into the fuse box?

Take the bulbs out and clean the contacts.

The flasher on the Q is a square box located near the fuse block, but not mounted to it... I would still replace the bulbs and clean the contacts... I have never heard of a flasher failure before.

I get that occasionally...front drivers side stops flashing and the rear driver's flasher speeds up x2. I keep meaning to replace the bulb on the front (havent in 8 years of ownership) but it looks like a chore and I'm too lazy. Besides, the problem is short-lived when it does occur.
