I have a CAI, I am usually careful but this time I could not see the puddle. I took the CAI and noticed that some water was coming out, the car does not want to start. Anyone has any suggestions?

Best case? Remove the spark plug & fuel injectors, turn the engine to pressure the water out.

Worst case? Damage is already done - damaged connectors, crankshaft - requiring an engine rebuild/replacement.

You'll obviously want to drain/replace the oil, check the gaskets for leaks...

When you drove through the puddle - what occurred?

My daughter's first car ('95 Beretta) had a low intake and she drove through high water and killed it in seconds. Luckily for us, the insurance company totaled it under our comprehensive. She's now driving a Versa without one!

When I hit the water I immediately turn the wheel to avoid damage, but it was too late, by the time I straighten the steering wheel the motor was off and the it was hard to adjust the wheel.

I checked that I was in a dry place and I tried to start the car but it didn't. After I took the CAI and had the car towed to my place I noticed a change in the sound and as you can see from the videos there's a difference between the first link and the other two.

Water did come out of the CAI.

I've been trying to find a picture/diagram of the motor with labels so I know what I am looking at.

Thank you for the response.

That motor is DONE! I was just thinking of the hydro-lock today in the rain. I think I will be adding a by-pass to my CAI soon. The good news it that the prices for the Versa 1.8 are low. I have seen eBay motors for less than 1000.00

I will post another video tomorrow, the motor is sounding different. As time goes on I have noticed a significant difference. Still doesn't mean anything.

You're most likely screwed. It's gonna be a hefty cost to fix that engine. Good thing I have a stock intake...

Unless you've done work to fix the problem - stop cranking it. A hydrolocked engine that hasn't been properly drained/rebuilt isn't going to fix itself over night. If anything - you're just reducing the chances that it isn't damaged.

Wow, didn't know the CAI caused the damage to the engine from water. Maybe it's a good thing not to get one.

Nope not to worry... just add the bypass. They work!

That's a good idea, are they universal for AEM CAI? Where can you get them? The question I have is, what is the correct size for the Versa AEM CAI? Here is a link with the diffrerent sizes. http://www.racinglab.com/aem-bypass-valve.html

I am not sure of the AEM CAI. Just go measure it. The install is very easy. You just replace the rubber coupler with this new part....OR.. just cut an inch section out of your intake and pop it in.

The Fujita Air Intake has a 2.75" pipe after the step-down, that is what I ordered.

In the past car, (VW R32) we had a ton of guys taking out motors with hyrdo-lock, but they are $10,000 for a new one. Seriously the versa motors are CHEAP... I have seen them at 300-1100 on ebay.

Here is one 09 with 5K miles: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors....m245

I will take the car to the mechanic on Tuesday, I will see what they have to say and how much they plan to charge. I'm interested to know what is going to be cheaper, buy a motor or fixing this one (assuming that it can be fixed).

Thanks for the links.

If you can take it to a mechanic I would ask them to take out the plugs and try to manually spin the crankshaft. If they do that, there is a good chance that the water will shoot out the plug areas, I know my friend did that with his truck when it was locked up and it worked fine. However, in the case of the Versa it may different since the engine components aren't the most sturdy things. It also sounds like your starter is dead because you kept on trying to start the car, that will probably have to be replaced as well.

Cliff notes:

*Take plugs out and crank engine by hand. - Results: Good - water will shoot out plug areas, Bad - Nothing will happen and engine will be the same.

*Check/Replace starter if engine is still working after cranking manually.

Good luck!

If you wish to spend anymore time on it.... Do a compression test. This will give you a QUICK idea what is going on.

To do so you will have to remove the plugs anyway. I will guess that you have a hole in one of your pistons and/or a bent rod. The Compression test will tell you the true story before you have to pull the head.

Here is one, but you can get them all over.http://www.amazon.com/Actron-C...0BM28

I got the car back, total cost for repairs $985

$400 Labor$524 parts

4 spark plugs4 ignition coilsupper manifold gasketoil filteroilshop supplies

After driving a Dodge Caliber for almost two weeks it feels good to drive the Versa.

No more puddles, even if it looks fun. Now I need to order that bypass.

Thanks for everyones comments/help/suggestions.

That's expensive, at least you now know to get that CAI bypass. Let us know what the size is. I plan to get the AEM one.
