Okay...

So I bought this '87 Pulsar for $500 bucks with the idea that I would put it back together and drive it while the S13 is torn apart and rebuilt.

Well, I got it all back together, new cylinder head, new seals, several thousand new gaskets, basically everything on the engine except the crank, block and pistons is brand new. And it runs like a swiss watch.

But it failed the hydrocarbon emissions test. BADLY. The numbers:

HC (PPM) High Speed Standard: 220 Me: 287HC (PPM) Low Speed Standard:220 Me: 390

CO Standard (High and Low) 1.20% Me High: 0.89% Me Low: 0.67CO2% (High/Low) : 13.7/13.3O2% (High/Low) : 1.3/2.0

As I look at the report, it appears that he didn't measure NOx.

The guy who did the test said he would suspect the catalytic converter, but if the cat was bad, wouldn't something other than HC been high as well?

Can old gas cause high HC readings? It occurred to me on the way home that the gas in the tank had been put in there back in early August of last year. And there was a little gas in the tank then that had been there God only knows how long. (Put it this way....the car was last driven in 1998, so far as I can tell.) I filled the tank with fresh gas, but had to wait for nightfall so I can sneak out on the back roads and really hit it. (As much as you can with a 1.6L SOHC 8-valve E16i...)

Anyway, any help is appreciated.

TIA,

Chris'92 S13 Coupe'87 N13 Pulsar

what I woudl do is get some fresh gas, run the car real hard so that you get everything real hot so you can burn off crap thats been sitting in therefor a while, and then add some of that "emissions pass" stuff to the gas...
