Does anyone have experience with reusing the timing belt tensioner when doing a timing belt? I read on the courtesy website that the tensioner cannot be reset, I dont see why it would be a problem to reset it, and my WRX runs the same type of tensioner and can be reset as per the Subaru FSM. so my question is will it be extremely detrimental to reset the tensioner and then release the hold bolt once it and the timing belt are on?

Thanks Anton

Yes, you have to compress it and reinstall the stop bolt. A C-clamp works fine, just compress is slowly and then install the 10mm bolt and install the tensioner as if it were a new one. Don't use the bolt to set it back or it will break.

If you're talking about reusing the old tensioner, I've done that, but the old one was only about 15k old.

To do the timing belt, you need to tighten the bolt down to get the belt on, then release the bolt and adjust the mounting points of the tensioner so that there is 4mm of extension on the hydraulic extension.

Really my question was whether i could reuse the old tensioner, i got scared when the courtesy wbsite set it cant be reset, my tensioner came on the JDM engine and seems to be in very good condition and it compresses and decompresses very well, no leaks around the seal or shaft. I used my vice to compress it slowly and installed the hold bolt, so i'm really to go, just ordered the idlers and new water pump. This week is my sping break and i am hoping to get everything put together and drop the engine in next weekend.

Thanks for your answers guys this is exactly what I needed to know.
