i got a CA18DET and the valvetrain uses hydraulic lifters in the vlavetrain, should these be replaced when rebuilding the engine?

I am also looking to use HKS 256 IN and 264 EX cams both using the OE 8.5mm lift with adjustable cam gears, should i get upgraded springs & retianers? and from where? i have heard that the VG30 valetrain is very similar and uses some of the same parts, are the valve springs the same by chance?

also when are solid lifters required? for high revs or cams etc, or both?

thnaks

In an ideal world yes the lifters should be replaced when doing a rebuild because they wear out like any other part. Do people always do it, no, because it can get expensive.

If the cam maker suggest different springs with different forces then yes get the new springs. If not you can have the springs tested to see if they are still withing factory spec, if not replace them. Keep ya from getting the ticks that are sometimes associated with more aggresive cams. If I was going in I would replace all lifters and springs, just because that's the way I am. Courtesy Nissan recently has put the VG30De lifters on sale for 1/3 the normal cost which would save MAD cash considering the VG has 24!Anyway, it's important that your springs match with exactly what the cam manufacturer (regrinder) has spec'd out. otherwise premature lifter wear and slap could occur.

well the cams are HKS ones, that are supposed to be drop in replacements. and is 256 IN and 264 EX that radical?

i'll see what courtesy nissan has, as far as the lifters go.

I think i may try to get some HKS or JUN springs, my entire CA18DET engine is in pieces. awaiting a LONG list of parts, i might as well do it right.

if HKS makes springs, stick with theirs and don't go with JUN's unless the spring/cam combo has been proven fail safe. I'm just warning you to be extra precautious because of the cost of labor to do the work from the beginning
