1997 Q45, HVAC and radio display were inop this evening and then began working. I read several posts about the HVAC display failing but this was both radio and HVAC display, all functions worked just no display.

Is there a common connection between both? Any ideas on 1997 + cars?

ThanksAndy

I'm kind of bummed b/c this is the first real failure in my car in 3 years and 50K miles.

Consider yourself extremely lucky "first real failure in my car in 3 years and 50K miles. "From 120k to 170k I spent $10,700 on my 1990 Q to repair failures and normal wear/tear/mainteance items.

Hopefully you have been saving the recommended 15 cents per mile so your have $7500 [less expenses] to fix faults.

How is your fuel pump, transmission, coils, starter, ac system, shocks?

Display failures are rarer on 1997 Cima redesign but they occur especially after 12 years of use.

New or junkyard components are your choices.Use FSM to diagnose.

Well, guess what?

The display wasn't broken-my symptom reporter-aka my wife- was mistaken. The interior dimmer was placed in such a way that allowed a dead spot on the rheostat to be erratic, moved the dial microscopically and it was back to normal.

Whew! back to "no" repairs after 247K miles.

What? You're not going to refurbish the rheostat?
