My 1993 Altima GLE's vent system is stuck in defrost mode. The lights on the control head light up when you select the other settings (floor, vent, etc.), but it will only blow through the defrost. I noticed a few months ago that the actuator would over run it's stop and start clicking. Usually if I would turn off the system and wait a minute or two then turn it back on it would go away.

I went ahead and pulled what I think is the actuator. While it was still hooked to the wiring harness I turned the ignition on and tried to get it to yurn to no avail.

So my question is: Is this the actuator?

If yes, should I be able to turn it by hand?

Also, what is this part going to cost me?

Thanks for any help...

If this is the actuator that was clicking then it will need to be replaced. You can open it up and more than likely find the plastic gears stripped in it.I can't tell by looks if this is the actuator for defrost mode. Can't tell you on cost.

Yes, that was the actuator, but the teeth on the gears where fine. My guess is the motor had burnt up. Anyway, for once the dealer had the part in stock and $32 later I was out the door...

A part like that being in stock is an indication they seel enough of them a year to warrent keeping them in inventory [ a sign its a pretty common problem] If its the one near the drivers side lower corner of the glove box, I have done quite a few of those my self. when you ty to change modes on the doors it would just sit there and click over and over again and the output never would change vent position.
