HVAC control unit

I've got the 3-knob configuration HVAC control unit in my '98 Pathy. If the unit craps out, can I simply replace it with a unit from another Pathfinder (plug-n-play) or are the units "locked" to each Pathfinder they're installed in?

it has to be the same one (three knob) and it'll be plug and play. But if you try to take a digital/electronic one then it will not plug and play

Thanks, Fueler! I'm in the process of doing an interior overhaul, and while I've put white LEDs behind the current HVAC unit knobs, the AC/Interior button lights are burned out and I can't figure out for the life of me how to replace those little ones.
