Hmmm ... I am in eastern Tennessee right now and will be driving to Atlanta tomorrow afternoon, with a flight out on Thursday afternoon! I sure hope my flight is not delayed/cancelled. Do you know the track of Ivan and when/if it is likely to be near Atlanta?

Yup, that's gonna tear some **** up. Good luck to all in it's path, I wish the best for you. Hurricane season always reminds me how earthquakes aren't really so bad. They're devastating, but we don't get multiples every year.

On another note, I could look at satalite pics of hurricanes for hours. Something that just looks so peacefull about them, even though you know it's hell under there.

Argh! I have to leave Atlanta at 4pm Thursday. Hope the winds are low enough to allow planes to take off ... or else it stalls a bit further South.

"New Orleans emergency manager Walter Maestri told The Washington Post the city had 10,000 body bags ready in case anything greater than a category three hurricane -- the maximum the city's levees are designed to withstand -- should strike."

This is one NASTY storm. Be safe.

gabossie, for some reason, I like this sat pics too. Its weird to see something so powerful and devasting look so calm.szhosain, where ya heading from ATL on Thurs?? I had a flight out of ATL last Wed and we got delayed even though the hurricane had pasted. They said the weather between ATL and DC was bad, so we had to sit on the plane for 1.5 hour til we got the go-ahead.

If something like Ivan ever hit New Orleans head on, the city would literally be wiped off the map. The water table is so high, the damn place was built on a swamp. I remember seeing some science show where they showed what would happen to N.O. if a BIG hurricane ever did hit dead on, it's not something anyone would want to be around for.

I was talking to another customer, and I found myself wishing this thing would hit us in Miami Fl.

I know this sounds kinda stupid, but I think most of us in south FL are very prepared for a Hurricane of this caliber. Our buildings are up to code (mostly), and our storm surge preparations are alot better than Cat3. I know we have already been hit, and no one needs this, but I do feel bad for all of those areas.

People will die, Things will be destroyed and homes will be lost. I would rather it be here than in those areas that will be affected more.

Cool pics....if you search you can see basically al line of tropical storms/hurricanes all the way to Africa. Gotta love the way the ocean works with the atmosphere and these lovely storms that are produced.

The power of nature is tremendous... it's awe inspiring, too bad it will strike New Orleans and we will lose alot of a great city.

I was supposed to be going to New Orleans over new years too for the national AIAS conventions, wonder if that'll still be on. Again, good luck to everyone in those areas.

It's nice to live in the midwest during Huricanne season. Especially this year. There just hasn't been a break except for a week to clean up before the next comes and messes everything up again.

Stay safe Southern NICOnauts.

They cancelled school for tomorrow already.

Oddly, I still have to be at school at 4pm to go to Wake Forest (NC) for a debate tournament... figure that one out... leaving the path of the storm during the beginning only to have to drive back through it a couple days later...

What kind of debate? High school or college level? Judging or participating?

My flight is a Delta non-stop to San Jose, California - leaves ATL at 4:09pm. I sure hope it gets a chance to take off even close to on-time ...

High school Varsity. I'm ex-Policy and am doing a new event called Public Forum that focuses on current issues and has a shorter format (rounds are about 35 minutes). I'm a junior. Second year debater, first for PF, but with my Policy background I'm already varsity. (As a Novice in Policy we were 7th in our Distric in an open division, a tough division at that. I ended up with roughly 400ish NFL points in my first year.)

My school has the top PF program in the state. Our top team last year never lost a round in GA, went to TOC and Nats. My partner and I are slated to be the next A team as far as our coach is concerned.

I'll be judging at my school's tournament and I judge at local Tuesday night mini-tournaments as well.

At Wake I was to participate, however about 2 hours ago my coach called to inform me that we're not going cause of the storm.

Nice! I did all Lincoln-Douglas in high school, as well as impromptu speaking. As team captain I pushed impromptu really hard, but everyone on the team really gravitated toward interpretive events, and they had a knack for it.

Never did policy debate, though I've watched a few rounds. Definitely not for me. Also did Student Congress. I never understood how Student Congress was judged.

When I was a freshman, we were required to take speech. Unfortunately, I signed up for speech forensics(debate class). God that was a mistake...

I suck at public speaking. I suck at speaking in general. I can formulate an argument, but I need as much time as I want, with pressure off.... haha.
