I am so excited that I have found this forum. I have a 95 j30. I love it to death and would like to make it last at least 2 more years...BUT I am having some difficulties. I am going to list all my problems/questions in hopes that someone has dealt with any of these issues. The nearest dealer is about 100 miles away, and frankly, I don't know if I can afford their work. So I thought I might ask you all. Thanks so much for taking time to look over my issues.

1. My AC quit blowing today. It still cools, but nothing comes out of any of the vents. There is definitely freon circulating and it does get cold, but no blow. (If I can't fix this cheap, I will have to trade her in.) When it was working, the fan really only blew on high. None of the other settings produced any air. 2. The headlight on the driver's side works...only when it wants to. When it goes out neither high or low beam works. The bulb is fine. There is no power to the bulb when it goes out (we checked).3. There is a DEFINITE shimmy when the brakes are applied. We replaced the roters (which were unevenly worn). It is doing it again. Could there be a deeper problem?4. The odometer only works sometimes. I use the tripometer to track gas milage, but I can't any more because it will stop working.5. The moon roof will not open. When I activate the controls I can hear them working, but the thing won't budge. It will tilt up and down, but not back n forth.

Obviously, some of these problems aren't a big deal. But I figure, since I have found a group of people who deal with these cars often, it doesn't hurt to ask. Thanks for hangin in this long!

littlewillie wrote:Sounds like your fan/blower switch is bad. The fan has 4 speeds & it was only working on hi & now not at all. The A/C system seems to be working, as it should. If it’s the fan/blower that’s the problem, it will not work for the heat & defrost either.

*When I turn the thermostat up hot air does come out. Is it possible that it is just free-flowing from the engine and not actually being blown out?

These are common problems. The headlight problem is a relay & for about $25 it can be fixed. If you changed your rotors, you can replace the headlight relay. The sunroof can be more difficult. You can read about them here:http://fuzzycats.com/j30_diy.htm

This is tough to pin point. Could be tires, front-end components: tie rod ends & idle arm or even the rotors that you just put on. Are you getting any steering wheel shimming without applying the brakes?

*I know that I have at least 1 tire out of round. I plan to buy new tires very soon (assuming I fix the AC). If I remember correctly, the rotors my hubby pulled off were worn thinner on one side (part of each was thinner than the rest).

I can't tell you anything about this.

*Thanks so much for your advice!

Willie

Your brake rotors could very easily be warped again causing the shimmy when braking.

There are two things at least that will warp rotors no matter what kind you get:

Heavy braking all the way to a stop and then holding the pedal so that the pads are on the same position on the rotor for awhile. This will cause a build-up of heat on that one spot and can cause warpage.

The second is having the rotors hot and then hitting a puddle and getting them wet.
