i have this really weird humming sound coming from my distrubitor/valve cover and i don't know what it is...:confused: but i noticed when i take off my oil cap while the car is running it somtimes gets louder .......:help

use a long screw driver or an engine stethascope and place it against the engine at different points. Place your ear against the end of the screw driver if thats the method your using and listen to the difference betwen each point. Try to isolate its location by finding the loudest point. your noise could be anything from a bad bearing in the water pump,altenator,p/s pump to a bad timing chain guide.

i never thought of using a screw driver to isolate the sound. i'll check it out as soon as i can, and i'll let you know what i find out.

i sort of found the sound, i'm sure it must be the timeing chain/guids i hope one of them dosn't break. thanks for the tip to use the screw driver. :)
