The problem is individual discriptions of sounds in writing vary. Is the whistle like a train or boat whistle, a dog whistle or a human whisting. How long does it last in seconds [exact please], does intensity or pitch vary.

Most people are not trained experienced NOVELIST and may not select the the EXACT appropriate paragraph to fully describe a Sound so that the reader can perfectly duplicate it in their mind.

Why not provide a link to an actual recording?

I really do think it's an idler pulley bearing. They tend to lock for a few seconds during cold startup, causing a few seconds of a screech. Then you'll get several minutes of a howl that sounds just like a Ford power steering pump... That howl would change with the idle speed though.

A mechanic's stethoscope should help you narrow it down. http://www.harborfreight.com/c...41966

try shaking the fan blade when the engine is off to see if there is any play in the clutch, the noise might be coming from the fan clutch

also check the water pump. it sits behind the fan and is on the front of the engine, the noise could be transmitting to the fan
