After taking a drive from my new house to my parents today I got behind a large truck in the rain. My car to give you a little insight is a 89 coupe with RB20DET swap. Someone before I purchased the car went forth and tried to wire-tuck the engine bay and relocate the harness under the front fenders and bumper. I have been working on swapping my silvia s13 frontend the past few weeks and do not currently have a bumper on my car.

I was following the truck, passed in the next passing zone and at the top of the zone the car started missing. I first assumed it was maybe from a sharp curve doing a little fast and low gas, however I had a 1/4i tank. The car continued to miss and spit and sputter so I slowed down and pulled over in the piss pouring rain. Car never died just idled like s*** and missed horribly. Would not hardly even make it back on to the highway. I nursed it onto the highway and at the next intersection pulled over and began looking for maybe a popped coupler or something from my FMIC, nothing was un-clamped. I ended up turning the car off and it would not start back. While cranking it would start and rev up but as soon as the key was out of the start position it wouldnt run and just died. So i noticed by holding the key between the On position and the Start position the car would idle and pull so this is how I limped onto my parents garage. The problem c ured itself halfway there and i no longer had to hold the key. I decided I must have had water in the relocated under fender fuse box. So i attempted to place a fan and dry it out while at the garage. On my way home the car pulled under its own power and ran fine for a short distance, Then started really missing and sputtering under a load at low rpms, I decided to grab some things from the part store and Assumed maybe bad gas or water.

I added HEAT and fuel injection cleaner, and purchased a set of AutoLite plugs which were equivalent to a heat range 6 that matched a NGK. I installed them once I got home because the car was running very s***ty.

The car has a N62 MAF and will not run without my SAFC hooked in and IN 2 OUT 4 programmed on the Hotwire setting, I attempted to unplug the safc to see if the MAF circuit was the problem and car died.

I replaced the plugs and cleaned the maf with electronic spray cleaner and did not touch the center electrode piece at any time. The car now cranks and idles perfect. However when you grab the throttle cable or try to accelerate as soon as it would begin to move it falls on its face and cuts out. It will hardly pull around my culitsac in the complex. It just seems to cut out and I dont understand what could have all of the sudden occured. Car ran great last night and today s***.

Also when I was checking relays on the under fender box I heard a noise sounds like a motorized antenna retracting and its coming from my ECU.

I tried my best to pull the codes and all I get is 55. Does anyone have any CLUE what might be my problem. Is it a BAD TPS, BAD MAF, WATer in a FUSE Box from no front bumper, Will it Dry out and be fine? IS my ECU BAD?

Also the problem with the cutting out during acceleration also occured before changing the plugs.

Someone please enlighten me as to what I may check next..

Thanks,

My number is (828) 773-2012 you may call or txt if you have any idea what could be the cause..

could be a bad ignitor, or Cam angle sensor going bad. Or you got a short from the water on the road. 55 = all is good.

That sucks!!

Get the FSM if you don't have it.

Well start with the basics.

Make sure that all 6 Cyls have Spark and Fuel.Pull the spark plugs out flip the coils upside down stick the plug in there. Rig up some kind of Ground for the plug. Then have a friend crank it.Check that all are Arcing then smell each cyl to make sure it smells like gas.

Then do the tests for the MAF, CAS and Ignitor.

If you can try to swap ecu's.Make sure your wiring is all dry before you do.

After you fix the car make sure you move that wiring to a safe local.

The SAFC "loops" the MAF wire to go through it, and adjust the MAF signal.

When you remove it, there is no MAF signal to the ECU, so thats why It didn't run.

I'm voting on MAF issue, wiring, or a boost leak you can't find.

What happens when you remove the AFC, but hook the MAF wire up as stock? Does it work?

When i hook the wire back to the stock harness or bridge the maf circuit the car runs like crap. It only works out good when its set on in 2 out 4..

sounds more like you have water in your relays...this is why a fusebox reloacation is a bad idea unless its done right and sealed.try drying out the fusebox and checking fuses...it might go away it might not.

Car dried out however my gap on the new plugs was to large and it causes a cutting out at 4500rpms. Car runs great otherwise. So this afternoon we re-gapped the plugs to .022 and runs great 13psi and no hesitation. Time to start modding again.

And the relocated FUSE BOX is taken care of I remounted inside the engine compartment. Idiot idea in the first place by one of the previous owners

have no idea what mods you have on your RB but @ .022 gap that tells me your coilpacks arent very strong...may want to think about getting a set of stronger ones...you should be able to run your car easily on .028 -.030 with good coil packs...if you have to regap your plugs that low your coilpacks are losing some of thier zap...eventually you will start having issues like i did and they will start dropping like flies.. i ended going with a set of splitfire coilpacks and havent look back since..my plugs are gapped at .030 and im running a T67 turbo with no issues whatsoever..
