On Tuesday, April 20th 2010 an explosion took place on the Macondo Prospect in the Gulf of Mexico. The explosion has led to what is believed to be largest oil spill in this nation’s history. This catastrophic event is now threatening the livelihood of the Gulf’s entire ecosystem, and scientists are saying the oil spill’s damage is being intensified by its unfortunate timing. While pelicans, shrimp, alligators, sea turtles, and thousands of other species are reproducing, about 210,000 gallons of crude oil are being leaked into the gulf daily. Although scientists have had to reevaluate their estimates on the ecological damages and casualties, on a daily basis, we can only imagine the further damage this ecological area will have to sustain.
