I've searched and most of the post on this topic are old or that don't help me figure out my problem.

The Speedometer on my 1989 coupe 240sx HUD speedometer stoped working a while ago, I've checked many of the different post to correct the problem with no luck. I've tried two other HUD clusters and none of them worked( I know there are known to go bad but three go bad??), I changed the speedo sensor, still nothing. Here's the thing, a couple of weeks ago my alternator wasn't powering like it should and the speedo came on for a couple blocks while the lights were dim then I reved the engine and the lights came up to the correct brightness but the speedo went off. Some times when I start the car it comes on for a second or two then goes blank. I've checked the boards for black marks, nothing. A few post I've found say check certian termials. but not sure what they mean. It seems like a electric connection, but where to start( I hate wiring/electric problems!!) Can anyone help me with this, or has experenced it and fixed it. any ideas would be helpfullthanks

Dont waste your time with the alternator, is your cluster. 3 HUD cluster bad??? Yes very possible, they all go bad after years. DId you verified that they were good before you put them on the car??? My suggestion: Find a working one (see it working) and try it. If you cant find a cheap used one, your only options are to go with an analog cluster or buy the digi speedo HUD brand new (200.00) for the SOHC 240X's.....

the alt wasn't powering correctly(too low) thats why I already changed it. It was a different problem... there no other was to see if the wires are getting the right amount of power?

usually when the hud numbers arent working correctly it has to deal with an electrical capacitor located in the cluster speedo area.

on my original hud it never came on until this one day where it was like 95+ degrees. other than that, it never worked again.

today, i have a working hud. when its cold outside and im sitting in the car itll read like 5mph. it works fine once i get the car moving, i drive by an electronic speed check every day. when it hot enough, like 85, itll say 0 when im sitting in my car.

and you can check by like pulling out the cluster and taking a soldering iron to each capacitor until you find the one that works when you heat it up.

my hud works fine but the lights in the gauges go out on me. i think its the wires behind the dash. check all the wires and see which one powers your hud and get it fixed.
