I bought an '89 240 XE coupe about 2 weeks ago and found that the Dimmer/Brighter switch that controls the HUD and the dash only works for a scant few moments after the car is first started up in the morning, and requires alot of fussing over in order to work after that(repeatedly hitting the dim, then bright, then dim again....) could it just be the switch it's self??? I keep hearing how 240's digital dashes are notoriously tempermental, the Heads-up especally, but I know the problem lies with that switch, driving at night with the HUD at full brightness gets really annoying, and when it rains during the day (I live in Florida) I can barely see the HUD if it's turned down for night driving....help, please:help

Hey man, I had an 89 and it too had the same problem, I pulled off the switch, and quite simply, the contacts were dirty. If you've already tried that, take it to the dealership, sometimes the guys will just slip you the parts you need for a "consultation fee"(i.e. 20 bucks).

there are also other known incedents with the hud that have been asnswered in this forum and in the 240 technical. dont have the links at the moment but if you browse through you might come across them. I'll post them if i come across them

dude, I'm a lube tech (oil change boy) at classic nissan in orlando, and NONE of the techs even want to go near that heads up, tried cleaning the contacts, but it's still being difficult....

its most likely a cold soldier joint on the circuit board either on the speedo head in your cluster or on the hud control board. most likely where the harness connector socket is soildered to the board. very common fault.
