How do you determine if your hub and bearing is bad. More importantly, which one. 82k miles and I hear scraping/rubbing sound that gets progressively worse/faster as I increase speed. It's coming from the passenger side I believe.
1/ is this a hub or bearing issue...or is that one piece...or is it both things that need to change?
2/ how do I determine if its the front or rear of the car? I can't pin point it from driving.

The bearing/hub come together as an assembly.

Thanks. So basically jack the car up and rock the wheel from side to side? And if there is no play, what would cause the sound?

Since your car is AWD, I would do this in your place:
Make sure the car is chocked, put car in neutral.
Jack up each corner at one time, spin the wheel as fast as you can by hand and see if you notice a grinding or like a faint humming/ratcheting sound. Also compare each side for the noise difference. Please, please make sure the car is chocked when you jack up the car!! Also if you didn't read that whole thread that I posted the link to, please read it all since it also has more info on how different ppl found their wheel bearing issues.

I took it to the dealer to get my oil changed and they told me my front passenger one was bad.. :naughty:

They wanted a little over $500 (parts and labor) - I got mine from an Infiniti dealer on Fleabay for about $160 and did the work myself.

I just recently had this issue on my 07 M35x. I swore it was the drivers side, but once the weather got nicer out and i rolled my windows down i could hear the metal grinding on the passengers side as i drove next to barriers and/or close to shrubs to echo the noise back

If yours are making noise then you should be able to lower one front window at a time and drive next to some type of barrier and listen for the noise. Just make sure that if you lower your drivers side window, you drive close to a barrier thats on your drivers side and vice versa.

When i did this, there was no mistaking which side was bad.

I haven't bn able to check it yet, but for the past two days it hasn't been as loud....or more so i haven't been able to hear it at all. Is this a problem that the noise can come and go, or its simply a matter of once its here, its here to stay until its fixed?

When my wheel hub went bad the noise was always there. It was fairly quiet and couldnt really be heard though when just cruising, it became louder the more weight I put onto that wheel. Such as in left hand turns, the faster I took the turn the louder the noise would be.

I got mine fixed at the dealer along with some other general maintenance stuff and the wheel hub part cost a bit under $300 installed. But my dealer seems to charge less than most other people's

Mine only made noise going around corners. Thought it was the driver side, but found out it was the passenger when the car was jacked up. Luckily, they are the same (at least on a 20006 M45 the one I bought for the driver fit on the passenger). Rocking the wheel would be a way to find it sometimes, but it's not the only way, spinning the wheel also might work. Don't expect to hear it at speeds you can spin the wheel at, but expect to notice one spins more freely than the other (and possibly feel it when spinning the bad one depending on how bad it is). Mine was so bad it was difficult to spin by hand at all once the wheel was off, but it didn't rock.

when you turn, either left or right at around 30 MPH, you will hear the noise. jacking the car up and shaking the wheel didn't do much for me. the noise of failing bearing is pretty loud so you'll know it's there.

after doing both the front left and right bearings, i suggest you just buy the parts and swap it out. it's not hard but here are some tips

1- make sure when you put the new hub in, you line up the small hole for the speed sensor. if you don't and you break the sensor, well there's another 150 bucks to pay for. Don't ask me how i know :)

2- to take the old hub off, make sure you have some leverage behind the hub and bang the crap out of it. it's going away so do not take any mercy.

good luck

I believe my bearing was bad while it was under warranty, but the dealer said it wouldn't rock and didn't replace it, so don't be afraid to push them. In my case, I'm not sure if they actually didn't even try to spin it or only checked the wrong wheel. Regardless, it lasted a long time after that since I ignored the sound (this is why it would barely spin by hand with the wheel removed, but it still wouldn't rock, so if the tech was incompetent and de looked at it even tens of thousands of miles later, he still may have said it was not bad).

So - I definitely need front ones - but I HATE paying someone to do something I can do, however I've never changed out hubs before, and I'm not sure if there's anything I need to be mindful about because I have an M35X - I'm looking thru the DIYs, I found the hubs, I can get them for approx. $150 each, just wondering how difficult it is to change on an X?

So, I jumped in my car to take it to the dealer and of course the noise is gone totally. I did numerous turns and figure eights all the way down the street and nothing. So I didn't bother taking it in because I don't want them to say they didn't find any issue and now charge me for some diagnostic fee. So my question again, can the sound come and go? If its a factor, can rain/water affect the noise by lubing something, because it was raining?

I THOUGHT I needed hubs/bearings. Long story short, it turned out to be my front axle! The universal joint on the main axle snapped and was literally disconnected! When I drove it sounded like I had cards stuck in the spokes of my wheels on my bicycle! Worsened as I drove faster.

One way I figured it wasn't my bearing was I jacked the car up and spun the front wheels forward then backward there was a slight grinding/metal on metal nose and lock up as I reverse direction.

Bad bearings are generally a constant grinding and/or whining noise if you spin the wheels manually or drive slow. But don't confuse a grinding noise with your breaks a this can create a grinding noise as well if they aren't installed properly.

Cost me $1000 to repair. And my bearings are fine.
