the only thing that stinks about this type of thing is the days of the true "machinist" are going by the wayside.. People that could machine a part like that on a manual machine are a dying breed... granted some of those 2-axis moves that machine makes are pretty impractical to do manually...
Interestingly, I heard that CNC was originally created not to mass-produce parts, but to make shapes on milling machines and lathes that were not possible.. For many simple parts, programming a CNC is often more difficult for on-off things than just doing it manually... We have a lot of custom/one-off parts we machine by hand and we can hold just as good tolerances...
Also, newer equipment (especially lathes) are junk compared to the old school stuff... Some of those old lathes are bullet-proof, and are often worth rebuilding versus getting new.
