Honda is advertising the new Accord Coupe EX as 190 HP @ 7000 RPM.

The Altima Coupe 2.5S is 175 HP @ 5600 RPM.

This seems like an unequal comparison to me due to the RPM difference. The red lines on each car are only about 200 RPMs apart,

Can anyone clarify this? Thanks.

As far as I know, Hondas have always had a very high redline.

What do you need clarified? When car manufacturers list HP they list the maximum hp obtainable at a certain RPM.

Higher RPM does NOT mean more horsepower.

So with that in mind, the accord needs to hit 7k RPM inorder to use the ful 190 hp whereas the altima hits 170or w/e at 5000 RPM.

Just look at a dyno, the HP goes up, then back down as RPMS increase.

^^^ yep, not all cars reach top hp at red line. it sure feels like it because of the torque at high rpm's, but it's not the case. from what i've been told and seen on dyno charts, almost all motors peak hp power is reached about 800 to 500 rpms below redline.

Horsepower is overrated, what you really want is Torque, which is why i hate Honda engines. They keep bragging about how high thier horsepower is and the redline but every honda/acura i've been in it never feels very quick. This is why i belive Nissan/Toyota make much better engines than Honda, not only can they provide the same horsepower out of the same engine size, but provide much better torque at lower rpm to really give you that umph. while The honda might have 190, The altima will reach peak horsepower much quicker, not to mention 180 lbs/tq at @3900 rpm ( which is what matters more) vs the Hondas pathetic 162 @4400. Honda overrates thier horsepower and lies, The Acura TL used to be rated at 270 HP, but the second the new sae HP rating kicked in it became 253, it lost 17 horsepower which is an absolute joke. Most car manufactures only lost about 5 on average but Honda took the biggiest hit, Honda engines are given more credit than deserved.

Honda engines are very reliable though. Can't question that.

Honda engines are built with different goals in mind.

Their engines are good because their goal has always been to maintain high fuel economy while still having the performance. With this in mind, it makes perfect sense for the engine to rev really high in order to obtain such power, simply because no one would rev the engine to 7000rpm on a regular drive.

Nissan's goal has always been power and torque (except in the lower end cars). This is easily reflected in the fuel economy compared to honda.

As for Toyota....it seems that they just want a fair compromise between the power and economy.

They all make good engines, except I hate new Toyota's with a passion.

No - way - you must have severe problems if your oddessey only gets 9 mpg. My wifes Odessey gets no less than 20mpg - and on long trips can get close to 30 mpg.
