I have a old HP computer, that I want to upgrade. Playing games on it has become a pain in the a**. So I was thinking of getting a video card for it so it could helped it a little. But is a PCI (Not the PCI-E) video card (old stuff). Anyways what kind of video card have u guys used or witch one should I get for it? Or should I just upgrade the mother board?

It looks like you're using a Pentium4 in that machine...

Time to move on bro. Buying a graphics card for that PCI slot will be tough and if you do find one, your processor will be a bottle neck.

None of those computer parts will be salvageable except the case (which I don't recommend using) and the CD-Drive.

Computer shopping for the holidays?!

I agree. That thing is obsolete by today's standards. I would reuse the optical drive and perhaps the hard drive as said above.

That's what I tough lol. Well my other option would be building a gaming computer or buying a decent one and upgrading it. What do you guys think?

Building your own would yield better components, IMO. Often, pre-built OEM computers ship with very marginal power supplies, small cases and/or lousy cooling systems. All would hamper upgradeability.

Well actually I got a very good motherboard, 2 gig ram, and 400W powersource. All I need to put it together is a tower and a video card and I'm good to go. So with like 150 - 200$ I will have a good gaming computer.

400w Power supply and 2 gigs of Ram aren't going to get it done.

Depends on the power supply in question - computers aren't microwaves that require 700W+ under load for most typical configurations. But power supplies found in OEM computers are often quite anemic, and in this case the 400w stocker might not be sufficient. And yes, 2GB of RAM is marginal these days.

Sure...computers aren't microwaves....but many video cards require 300 watts or bigger power supplies.

Here's a list for some somewhat "decent" PCI cards.....pretty much the best you can do. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... CatId=1603

300-450W are reasonably sized power supplies - often, video card manufacturers "require" 500W or higher PSUs for their higher end models simply to cover their asses if one uses a substandard power supply.

I still think the OP should save his pennies for a new machine.

Pento I would look into 600-800w PS, i5 2500k and some where in the ball park of 6-8GBs of ram if you plan on gaming.
If you don't game, i3, ~400w PS and 4-6GBs of RAM.

You can also grab a cheaper setup by using AMD instead of Intel. It won't be as fast be it will be a better bang for your buck.

Mother board supports up to 4GBs of ram? Get a new one if you plan on gaming.
GT 120? Get a new one if you plan on gaming.
4GBs of ram? Get atleast 8GBs.
PS should be ok.
HDD is fine.

It's time for a whole new revamp bro. Also DL CPU-Z for details on all your PC hardware.
