This is a guide on how to use a Foxwell scanner to determine what sensor triggered the factory theft alarm on your M37/Q70.

Items required:
  • Foxwell scanner with Nissan / Infiniti license (I am using a NT-710)
  • Diagnostic cable that came with the scanner
Background:
The body control module (BCM) records some history data about what sensor(s) have set off the factory alarm.

The view of this history in the Foxwell scanner is a little unintuitive. From testing, it appears that:
  • There is one history record for each sensor that can trigger the alarm
  • The record for each sensor has two states
    • On - this sensor has triggered an alarm since the last history clear
    • Off - this sensor has not triggered an alarm since the last history clear
  • Clearing the history ("deleting the operation history") simply sets the value of each sensor to "Off" (not triggered).

Viewing the alarm data:
  1. Turn the ignition on, connect the scanner, and start a diagnostic session to your car.
  2. Check and record the sensor history:
    • Select Control Modules > BCM > Special Functions
      Image
    • Scroll down the BCM Special Functions page and select THEFT ALM
      Image
    • Select Theft alm trg
      Image
    • You will then see a screen that looks like this. You can scroll down to see more sensor values. Write the history values down or grab a screenshot:
      Image
  3. Analyze the history data
    • If only one sensor in the history shows "On", then logically that is the sensor that triggered the last alarm.
    • If multiple sensors in the history show "On", like in my screenshot above, then keep going.
  4. Clear the history data
    • From the same screen where you are viewing the history data, press the Start button in the lower right. Confirm any prompts if necessary. This clears the history.
  5. Confirm history data cleared - all your sensors should now show "Off"

  6. Wait for the alarm to trigger again
    • Or, if you're impatient and just want to see it in action, you can set off your alarm...
      • Roll down the left rear window
      • Lock the car to set the alarm
      • Carry the key out of range of the car for good measure
      • (Maybe grab some ear protection if you don't like horns honking next to you)
      • Reach in the open window and unlock/open the door
      • While the alarm is going off, run back to where you left the key and hit the unlock button to shut it off :chuckle:
  7. After you've triggered and stopped the alarm, get back in the car and start over from step 1 above to view the history again. Remember you can scroll down to see additional sensors. This is what my alarm history showed after I cleared history, set the alarm, and then set off the alarm via the left rear door:

Hope this helps!

Definitely wanna hear how the alarm troubleshooting goes! I don't have any gremlins to chase with the Foxwell right now (fingers crossed) so these sorts of "what if" scenarios are fun to figure out. Good luck!

I am just surprised that foxwell said they can’t scan the BCM on their website.
