I own a 99Q45t and was wondering about adding a turbo. I know I could fab up something as far as piping and a intercooler goes but not sure about the headers and bracket work.

First, the internals of the engine what are they, forged or hyper's? Second does anyone even turn these cars? I know adding a power added would require more fuel and the timing would have to be tinkered with but does anyone even do such a thing?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the board and nice car.

VH45DE is probably the more robust engine to modify, but both require deeppockets to do well and run on the street.

Check the Infiniti Mechanic and the Engineering forum for modified VH41DE for boat racing.

Pistons are cast, crank is forged.

Turn every time I come to a corner.

Theres nothing out there, so all your stuff will be custom custom, all your ECU work would have to be custom due to OBDII, proabbly have to run a greddy E manage or something like that.

Its very doable and with the much lower redline in the VH41 i suspect it could take nearly as much boost as the VH45, obviously not providing as much power..

Your transmission will need beefed up too...

For better off-the line performance, try swapping out the rear with a 300zx NA 4.10:1 rear end. I believe it is a direct swap.

Take a look at Slim's twin turbo (450zxtt). It is all custom, but sweet!

Agreed with Wes - will DEFINITELY need transmission work. One of the weakest areas of the Q...

Jeff's dead on here, search for post about sawpping the rear, it'll give you the best bang for the buck performance "feel".

If I change the rear-end won't I damage the transmission and throw the shift points all off?

I had a 95 Mustang and I built a 347 stroker and I burnt up my transmission, or said the guy at the shop, because I didn't reburn my computer chip to compensate for the higher gear ratio.

By the way this site is awesome lot of very knowledge people.

I was even thinking about making a cold air induction kit for my car but I want it to look like it belongs rather than some redneck engineering job.

No it wont mess anything up.. just be sure to install a transmission cooler, which is needed regardless.

It's not a direct swap!

Half axles are different and shorter plus the number of bolts are diff. I'm working this project right now with a Z NA 4:08 diff and half axles. I also have a spare set of Q half axles because they need to be modified to get them to fit the Z's NA diff right. Swapping the subframe won't work either(would have been sweet if it did).

It won't mess up the transmission! Once you have a 4:08 you will never want to go back.

Once this is done I'll post. Still a couple of months off because I'm doing so much other stuff right now.

REdman, he has a Y33 Q!!!!!

Besides, all you gotta do to make it go into the Q is get the 300ZX NA wheel bearings (not sure if slim mentioned this to you but he told me that)...

It should go right in with the 300ZX NA diff, halfshafts and wheel bearings.

Y33.. Ohh.

It's not as easy as I thought it would be Wes. I've already been playing with it and left scratching my head. It will work, but more effort is needed to make it work.

PS. I painted my subframe bushings and collars yellow tonight!

Why am I the only Q guy on the Coast of NC? Somebody move here already, I'm getting lonely doing this all on my own!

Playing around with the NA diff and the Q's half axles, then just using the Z's axles and measuring things. It's like a mechanic's rubic's cube. I had to stop because it was like 2 in the morning and I was freezing! When I go to install the Subframe spacers and collars I will have a chance to really check out the NA rearend swap. That will be next week.

When I replaced the stock diff with the 4.083, the shift point from 1-2 is affected a little. The transmission shifts to 2nd gear faster and sooner than usual. So if I wanted to stay in 1st gear a little longer I pushed the accelleration a little deeper. Changes in other shift points are less noticable. The time it takes for switching between gears was definitely less than before, so that's a good thing IMO.

My car ('97) had the 4.083 diff on for approximately 15 Kmiles without any problem. Note that a very common mod on '98-'05 GS400/430 is replacing its stock diff with the higher ratio diff from the Supra's. Two of my friends had the mod on their '98 GS400 with no problem regarding the mod.

I'd love to have a FI for my car too. I just don't have the knowledge and the tools to do that. Please make a kit for our cars and I'll follow you right up.
