Heya all, name's astron...or ast....or cookieman. Sup?anyway, i found a 96 model 300zx today, 74k, 5 speed, se model according to carfax (i didnt notice a badge, forget if it had spoiler, gonna check tommorow..it did have multi spoke wheels, kinda odd looking) anyway, they want my grand am plus 3000 for it, grand am's worth 3500 to them (5500 blue book, go fig), what do ya'll think? Car's in good shape, 1 spot of rust on the fender, looks like a rockchip that went through, no biggy, needs a new shifter boot and a jack. Does this seem reasonable? What all do i need to watch out for with it? I know nissans are known for reliability, anything in particular to look for? thanksast

I don't think that the 300zx had an SE model. Are you sure you aren't talking about a 240sx? The 300zx came in Base, 2+2, Turbo and convertible (NEVER seen one of those before). Is it a turbo? If it is a 300zx it's worth the price they are asking.

Consider yourself luck to have not seen the convertable, I don't like em, I saw one at a Nissan Dealer about 7 or 8 months ago, they wanted like 35k for it.

I'd have a mechanic you trust check it out. The last generation Z's were great cars but could be quite expensive if not maintained well. more complex than a 240sx. If she's mechanically sound , sounds reasonable but you should have room to negotiate. Realize Grandam's are not known for their resale value. Good luck

If you do get it checked out an the rest of the car seems okay, then go for it. I've only drive the 300zxtt, but I'm sure the NA damn good too. Talk about a cramped engine bay though.....

The last gen 300zx's are my dream car.A white one, with the stock alloys, no kit, stock engine and stock exhaust. But it'd be factory twin turboed, factory NISMO rims riding on Pirelli's, and lowered with NISMO shocks and struts. That's my dream car :)

Hey Ast,

sounds like a great deal on the Z...the NA model was called GS. The mileage on the car is fairly low, but I would check to make sure all the routine maintence has been done.Alot of things are supposed to be replaced at 60k miles, including the timing belt, all drive belts and hoses, spark plugs, and water pump. If none of these things are done, be sure and set back a grand or so if you have a shop to do it (timing belt alone cost 600 dollars). These may seem pretty high, but you have to remember the engine bay is extremely cramped. If you are buying this car with the intent on adding some bolt-ons for more hp, I would go w/ a different car. You can spend around 4 grand on parts and only be pushing aroung 300-320 hp at the fly.

I agree on the convertibles. gah, they are Fugly. they dont look right, the way they are built. there is one down the street from me. that pearl white, black convt. top, rims, some kit, and dual big*** mufflers. i like the color, and the mufflers sound nice, but damn, why does it have to be a convt.

Yea...they only made the convertible in limited numbers..thats why they're hard to find, and it only came in the non-turbo version:http://caranddriver.radicalmed....htmlhttp://www.calgaryzclub.ca/McDuffie.jpg

The car was much heavier than the coupe vesion so this car was considered more of a touring version...Almost all the other Z's came stock with t-tops...there was a small production number of hardtops in 1994 I think. The hardcore racers want those because they weigh about 300 lbs less than the one with t-tops...but I think t-tops are a lot more fun.

i didn't know you couldn't get convertible in turbo form. that sucks. i would still absolutely love to have one, because of the rarity, and they look BA imo. i love them. i'd love to have any 300z actually, but the convertible would be up there on my choice of ones to get.

D'oh! Lets try that again. A 96 240sx, 74k, $7000. I was recently looking at a 90 300zx, thus the confusion(and i'm beginning to get pretty dyslexic in my not so old age....or something) I'm taking the car to the mechanic tommorow hopefully, if it checks out, i've got a loan comming. Unfortunately I cant seem to get a decent price for my grand am from anyone, dealers will pay 3500-4k for it, tops, blue book's 5500 though (car's got 109k on it)ast

I just bought a 96 s14, pearl white, 5spd. base model in absolutely mint condition and 77k for 6500, 6900 or so out the door.

Sounds like a good deal to me!

That's what i like to hear! I'm gonna try to get the price down alittle, even though they already lowered it 500 (basically say i've got exactly 3k to spend total, including tax, registration, and getting that noisy strut fixed--i assume it's a strut? loud suspension noise in the rear...having it checked out tommorow though)ast
