I dont have the money to buy a CAI but is the K&N air filter any good? or is it garbage?

40-50 dollar for air filter is expensive and I dont want to buy one if it not giving me a better acceleration.

Just don't run any filter at all if you want better acceleration or you can go with autozone cone filter kits. :bigthumb:

On side note though, my K&N drop-in filter just arrived today! Now I'm excited for this weekend to roll around, hopefully it's not hot.

i doubt you will feel whatever "power" the fliter gives you, BUT you will never have to buy another air filter again, that is what makes it worth it. if you want power save up for an intake.

Wow, I was thinking it was going to take me like half an hour to an hour to carefully take everything apart to replace the filter in the filter box. The versa air box was wonderfully and conveniently designed that it took me under 5 minutes to take out the old clogged up filter, clean out the filter box before installing new K&N drop-in filter, and put everything back together. Gotta love these new cars!

That suprised me too. I my old GM's I had to hold the two halves of the box apart while trying to extract the filter (without losing a finger) and get them far enough apart to put the new one in without catching it on a corner and damaging it. Every time I did it I kept thinking "This should be easier". I also had to take half the box out to add a gasket in order to use a K&N drop in filter.

Does anyone know the cfm of air that a 1.8 motor requires? often the k&n filters allow even more airflow, which isn't exactly bad, but it doesn't give extra power if your current filter already provides enough air.

So I took a plunge and bought the K&N air filter a month ago for 45 bucks at Advance Auto Parts and put it in immediately. On the hot day, I didn't notice any acceleration increases at all but in the morning or chilly day i notice that car accelerate faster.

Compare to the stock filter, the car accelerate faster (even when the AC is on) on the chilly day or chilly morning but the acceleration is the same during mid day driving. Now i'm having a buyer remorse because the engine oil get dirty a bit too quick and for 45 buck it not worth it plus you can't return it :frown: . So I guess i'll be saving up money for that CAI that I've been wanting for several months.

This is the same point my mechanic made when i inquired abt k&n for my old sentra.
It was also $60 Cdn at the time.
Mech apprentice said his made zero difference during normal driving, and seemed to make some difference at high revs.
This was on a MkIII Golf GTI 2.0L

After replacing my clogged/dirty oem filter, I gained some mpg's back. I don't care if my oil gets dirty faster, that's the point of doing oil changes at a regular interval.

No, I think those autozone cone filters are crap. I would never use them. All my cars have always had K&N or Apexi filters.

The K&N air filter seems to work best when you're driving on the high way. For me during driving with the AC on, i just press lightly on the gas pedal and it accelerate quicker then the stock filter. If you're driving in the city then forget about it.
