there are a couple of things that could be problems.

first you need to know what model sr you are dropping into which s chassis...some are a little more involved than others.

If you are not comfortable with wiring, get someone experienced to do your wiring.

Start off stock. dont get crazy and bolt a bunch of things to your motor before you drop it. Its easy enough to pull the motor later for a build but if you start swapping parts on you can mess something and you may not know if it is the motor or something you put on.

Take your time. Dont rush and make sure you have a full day or so for your first swap. (it generally takes less than a day if you are experience), but if not you need to be extra careful.

make a list of parts you will need and map out the install, and then do it again, and maybe a third time to make sure everything you will need is right at your fingertips. theres nothing worse than needing a mount or a pipe and having to order one to finish your swap.

find a motor from a reputable place. NICO sponsors are pretty well known for supplying quality motors...dont be afraid to pay a little more from a great company and if you have the ability to get a clip do it. if you have the ability to see it running before you buy do it.

Make sure your chassis isn't severely rusted or damaged before you start.

thats all I can think of to start off with. but there are a ton of threads and I doubt anyone is going to ad anything new to this topic

it is a pain in the a@@ a complete and utter time consuming abyss of crap which never ends. If you think you have it figured out you do not. Oh and buy a serviced harness before you go and put this in. 2 months now and still no car 2 months to go to get my harness back and then maybe I can get the engine in....

Have a backup plan to get to your job or school. Fully inspect your engine while is out. I would change water/oil pump and timing chain but not necessary, It would be wise tho. Just like above take your time you will spend more money on other stuff not just the initial engine cost so prep for that. I prep for 2 weeks for my first SR swap and still had to do like a million autopart store runs but at the end when it finally starts and runs good you'll be proud of yourself one or two tears might come out (maybe cause all the money you spent) and everything would be worth it.

Just out of curiosity, how many of you that did swaps are first timers? Are most of you professional auto mechanics? I want to do a swap badly but all I know is basic maintenance. Its very intimidating.

I was not a mechanic when I did my first swap. I just used common sense. I got under the car I looked and made mental notes of how everything was connected, and I did tons of research. When it was time to wrench things just naturally started sinking in.

I was fortunate enough to have a great 20k mile front clip that had everything. so I pulled that motor first and it prepared me for pulling the KA. But it is actually pretty suprising how simple it is. You just get a set of metric sockets and wrenches, a long handled driver or torque wrench, jack and stands, lift. drain it and start unbolting stuff in the right order.

the wiring was the scary part...I had that done elsewhere, but eventually had to get my hands wet in that too.

I consider myself a very novice mechanic still, but I can pull a KA or SR in a few hours just because it is relatively easy, you can't be stupid about it, but its not that complicated

since then I have done two honda swaps and about 5 s13 SRs...Now im going to be dropping my first S14 SR and I feel the butterflies all over again. Its the weirdness before trying something new.

i remember doing my first swap and that was in my 91 civic 4dr....i did lots of wiring it was a challenge at first but after doing that swap everything just fell into place....i've always been a car guy i started painting cars before i did swaps...but just think about it like this make sure you planned everything out and you'll be ok....kinda like that saying measure twice cut once!

Mm I see. Makes me feel kinda better I guess that some of you might be average Joes like me haha. I remember having an auto class back in High School. Our assignment was to take apart this old Ford V6 motor, clean and reassemble. So I am sorta familiar with engines. I always wanted to buy an engine, be it KA or SR and tinker around with it.
