When you first get into the car and start it does your car get to the temp the car is set to without driving? If it does, how long does it take?
If the temp outside is 47' and you have your car set to 82', how long will it take for your car to get there without driving...if it even gets there?
My car doesn't get there without driving, and I would guesstimate I'm getting to 65-70' after ten minutes, definitely nowhere near 80'.
Just for information purposes, the same question for getting the car cold in hot temperatures.

Interesting issue. I wonder if it's something as simple as your in cabin temp sensor or perhaps sun load sensor. The sun load sensor is the passengers side dash mounted at the end of the vent. It's a disc shaped plastic piece and in the right light you can see the sensor. The cabin temp sensor is at the drivers side below the start button. Kinda looks like a small vent. Are you blocking these two off? Try cleaning them out.

Mine will usually do it within 5 minutes of idling on a cold morning...it'll be nice and warm when I get back in. Same for the summer.

I can't see it being the sensors because it gets to the right temp once I start driving. If it was the sensor, I would think I would have the same issue while driving. Right? It's almost as if the engine needs to be "working", not just on to get the proper temps out of the car.

Another example is if I was driving and getting the right temps and then stopped with the engine running for about 20 minutes (that's a guess from experiencing this last year, I don't remember exactly how long) the temp would slowly start declining; so instead of getting 82', I'd be getting 72'....rough numbers.

I'll see what happens Friday, morning temps should be around 45'

I think I've heard of this being a radiator issue. Air in the coolant, but not enough to cause problems when the water pump is running faster. Not sure if that is right, but does the engine temp get higher when not driving? Alternatively, maybe it was something about the heat exchanger, which I believe also has coolant running through it. Regardless, while I'm not 100% sure, I don't think either of those would affect cooling, and you don't seem to be implying that cooling is affected.

I think dustins right. Most others complaining of this same issue reports their coolant levels were low. Ignore the levels in the overflow bottle open the rad cap when cold and fill coolant there. It also explains why your ac is fine but heater is not.
