22re it's the engine in toyota trucks. Not sure when they quit using it, or if they have.

22RE - Standard engine in 89 and up Toyota Pickups. I am very experienced with these engines and Toyota pickups in general. The 22 series engine is unbeatable. My current engine is all original, nothing but oil changes and has 314,000 miles on it, burns no oil and still gets 25+ MPG. These cars are unbeatable. Last I checked Toyota still used the daughter of the 22RE in the four-cylinder Tacoma trucks. I haul double the standard payload in mine on a regular basis and towed over the limit for many many years. These things make our Nissans seem like total piles of crap. No joke. The 22RE comes in almost every pickup from 89 on and every 4Runner up until around 98 I believe.

You can get a factory TRD supercharger for the '95-current 3.4liter v6. Awesome power, unassuming vehicle, stealth mode!

..a while back, there was a comparo(maybe in a Motor Trend) of a TRD supercharged Tacoma vs. the supercharged Nissan Frontier.. good read!

Found it!!

http://www.motortrend.com/road....html

"....While that TRD supercharger makes the Tacoma the hot rod of the two in a straight line, it surprisingly doesn't transform the truck's personality.

....The Tacoma SR5 with the TRD supercharger is a fine little performance truck in the traditional sense of the genre. However, the TRD supercharger's hefty price is not to be taken lightly. On the other side, despite its power deficit, the Nissan Frontier S/C appeals better to our mostly urban driving lifestyle. It's way more comfortable on pothole-ridden city streets, gets around corners more quickly and confidently, and certainly goes well enough. What's more, it looks the part of a muscular street truck, inside and out. In our modern, image-is-everything world, one in which you get your pickup's interior professionally detailed instead of cleaning it out with a garden hose, that may be the most important feature of all." --from the article

22R is 2.2 liter and the 22RE is 2.4 liter, Isn't that correct??? Anybody?

Anyway, I have a 4x4 3.4 Tacoma, and you can beat it. My friend has a low rider 22RE, and it is pretty quick. He has a spare engine he has been planning a build up, when he gets his SUV.

Umm, no. 22RE = 2.2 Litre, Single cam (R), Fuel Injected (E). The 22R is the original carburated version which I believe you could get all the way to 87 or 88. The 3.4 V6 in your Tacoma is renowed for being a sluggard in all it's incarnations sadly, still relatively reliable but not much for performance. It was woefully underpowered to push the later 4Runners it was put into. I have three spare 22REs in my garage so I can keep my little pickup going until the second coming of Christ.

Those videos were too funny. I love this community! I like in the second one after they drive it into the studio he says something like "we have a strange situation where the body is holding up the frame" HA priceless. Gotta give props to the Toyota guys and gals.

I had a friend that has a 1991 toyota p/u, and they are SOLDIERS. We went through anything we saw and it always won, never got stuck (4WD). It now has like 287,000 miles on it and still runs good, good mileage even with upgraded injectors, fuel pump, and bored out. On the contrary, my dad just sold an '91 Nissan p/u to his friend, and it has almost 300K miles on it. If I were to get a truck, I would prob spring for a nissan because I'm a diehard Nissan man ;)
