Not to thread jack, but does anybody know what wire to splice into to have the gauge lighting controled by the dimmer switch?

I would just like to know because I have my gauges wired directly to the ignition switch. So that whenever the key is on the gauges are all lit up and they are bright as hell lol.

boost - buy a vacuum splitter and place it in the vaccum line that is going from your throttle body to your FPR.

oil press. - the threading on the sender is probably 1/8 NPT. However, the SR block is a 1/8 BPST. Therefore you will need a 1/8 Male BSPT to 1/8 Female NPT adaptor. You can find this adapter from Mcmaster-carr. Do a search on their website for part# 4092K11. Just remove the stock oil pressure sensor and leave it unplugged. It will no longer be necessary since you will have your gauge monitoring your oil pressure.

water temp - Order yourself a water temp adaptor that goes in your upper radiator hose. Something like this http://www.sr20forum.com/revie...ct/59. Or you can try and tap your stock upper radiator neck with a 1/8NPT if you the correct tap.

A/F Ratio gauge - Throw it in the trash because its useless unless it is a real wideband o2 sensor.

You're talking about the different sizes for the sending units, how do you figure that out? I have a greddy temp sensor with sender, and I'm trying to find the right bung for it.

Most aftermarket sensors are going to be 1/8 NPT. Get yourself the greddy water temp adaptor. It should work just fine.

Sorry, I made a typo, I have a HKS water temp sensor, AND I just bought a new HKS hose adapter, which has a hole too big for the sensor. So, I'm trying to find the right size.

So what are you gonna do for your 12v power? I don't think you need a relay but an inline fuse might be a good idea. I'm trying to figure out the same thing right now.

ot sure what i will do for a fuse. i will probably run it off the radio fuse or the dash lights. most likely the dash lights so the fuse for them would be the same fuse. i am sure the lights wont draw much power especially since they are going to be wired int othe dimmer switch. so it should be fine.

Well, just an update. Last night I was playing around with my gauge wiring and was trying to get them to work through the dimmer switch. I pulled the vent controler out of the dash and found the wire that powers the lights (its the red one on the top row and in the middle of the smaller white plug) and taped into it. They dimmer switch has no effect on the gauge lighting I found out. I'm sure that there is a way to be able to use the dimmer switch on aftermarket gauges, but I think that it has something to do with a small little white box under the the drivers side kick panel. Its some kind of regulator that controls the lighting and theres light 30 wires and I didnt feel like messing with it so I just left my setup the way it is.

I'm not saying that it cant be done. I know of people how have theirs wired that way but they are all domestic vehicles.

I dont know if you figure out how to get them to work that way be sure to post it up.

trying to figure out what upper radiator hose diameter is for the SR hose? (34mm, i believe? or ~1 3/8'')

what brand of water temperature sender adapter would be able to use the 1/8 npt fitting? ac technic? megan?

Would this work?

Thanks.

i am going with autometer for a water temp gauge.

34mm sounds right to me.so you just cut your upper radiator hose and splice it in.

i think that would work

I just ordered a 36mm water temp adapter off ebay for about $15 shipped. The good thing about my adapter is that it has a spare bolt on the housing so that you can properly ground your sensor.

my autometer boost and oil pressure gauges are controlled with the dimmer switch. my defi however does not like it, when I did wire it up the defi would get brighter as the other 2 got dimmer and visa versa lol.

this is how I did it tho.

1 - get you multimeter 2 - invest in a multimeter if you can't complete step 1.3 - get access to the dimmer switch and wires ( i had to pull off the gauge cluster bezel)4 - either penetrate the wire sheath with the sharp part of multimeter probe or try to contact the metal part of the wire that sticks into the dimmer switch connector (not 100% sure if this is possible, I did this a LONG time ago).5 - turn your headlights on and see which wires voltage varies respectively with the dimmer switch (higher voltage as it's turned brighter)6 - thats your guy.

That's how I did it and it works great for my autometer and stewart warner or something gauge. They have a bulb with its own (+) and (-). You just use the varying voltage wire from the switch as (+) and ground as (-). The Defi has a ground and then one for illumination I believe, but when I wire it up it works like I explained before.

I'm on s14 so accessing the dimmer may be different, and I can look at my wires to tell you which mine is if it's absolutely dire. I imagine you could do the same w/o a multimeter by looking at a wiring diagram.
